action

1987: Adele is depressed and, as a single mother, takes care of her 13-year-old son Henry, who thinks he has to take on not only the role of a son, but also of a husband. They take the injured Frank with them in their car, who soon turns out to be an escaped convict who is already wanted by the police. Through flashbacks, the viewer learns that Frank is a Vietnam War veteran who married his pregnant girlfriend Mandy after his return. When the child was a year old, Mandy Frank revealed during an argument that the child was not his. Frank then bumped Mandy against the radiator, killing her. At the same time, the baby drowned, and Frank was sentenced to a long prison term for manslaughter.

Adele and Frank fall in love and plan to move to Canada with Henry. Meanwhile, a friendship develops between Henry and his new classmate Eleanor, who persuades him that the two of them want to leave him behind. A reward is offered for successful clues that lead to the capture of Frank. When a large police presence surrounds the house, Frank lets himself be arrested without resistance. Before that, he ties Adele and Henry so that they cannot be accused of having given shelter to a fugitive.

From the viewer's point of view, it remains unclear how the police received the information that Frank is with Adele. The film suggests the following variants:

  • When Eleanor learns of Frank's past, she reports him.
  • Adele and Henry withdraw a large amount of money from the bank. The banker becomes suspicious.
  • A neighbor brings pastries and sees Frank, who is home alone at the time. He pretends to be a handyman, but the neighbor doesn't quite believe it and seems to be suspicious.
  • Henry writes a letter to his father and puts it in his mailbox early in the morning. On the way back he is picked up by a patrol officer and driven home. There, the policeman becomes suspicious of the obvious travel arrangements, but apparently accepts Adele's explanations.
  • Henry's father finds the letter and is worried.

Adele writes letters to Frank in prison almost every day. One day she got all the unopened letters back from the prison in a package with the information that Frank had been moved.

Years later, Henry became a successful baker. Frank writes to him from prison and asks about his mother. Henry contacts him and is relieved that he no longer has to worry about his mother. After his release, Frank goes to see Adele, who still lives in her house without being married. They walk up to each other and hug.

reception

"[...]" Labor Day "is an implausible love story in its melodramatically exaggerated simplicity, which is enhanced by its superb leading actors: a film like a sweet peach cake, a culinary sin, but a beautiful one!"

“[...] What you [...] shouldn't do: Take Labor Day seriously. Then you would probably despair of the fact that with Brolin and Winslet two great actors can be seen here in one of the biggest mistakes of their careers. In addition, your head would probably burst if you thought of the beautiful films Jason Reitman made before. "
