The Spitzenkandidat (Original Title: The Front Runner ) is an American biopic and political drama from 2018 by Jason Reitman .

Based on the book All the Truth Is Out: The Week Politics Went Tabloid by Matt Bai , the presidential candidacy of the American Democrat Gary Hart in 1988 is discussed. The film premiered on August 31, 2018 at the Telluride Film Festival . Columbia Pictures was the film production company involved .

Gary Hart , a Democratic senator from Colorado , decides after internal party primaries for the presidential nomination in 1984 , where he Walter Mondale was defeated, again as a candidate for the primary elections of the United States presidential election in 1988 to set up.

His renewed candidacy was received positively by party colleagues. Hart's campaign in 1987 went well and he decided, against the will of his manager Bill Dixon, to let the media accompany him for a weekend outside of the campaign.

But shortly afterwards, photos of him, who is married, appear with a strange woman in the Miami Herald . The desperate attempt to save his reputation by making a statement fails and he is eliminated from the race for president . The stranger, who turns out to be journalist Donna Rice, denies ever having slept with Hart, and his wife decides to hold on to the marriage.

The film received mostly mixed reviews. For the most part, the acting performance of Hugh Jackman was recognized, which stands out from the "pale" remaining cast. On Rotten Tomatoes , out of a total of 208 reviews submitted, an average of 59 percent were positive with an average score of 6.22 out of 10. On Metacritic , the film received a Metascore of 61 out of 100 points based on 44 reviews .

Hugh Jackman was nominated for Best Actor at the AACTA International Awards in 2019 .
