Bates Motel is an American thriller - television series , which in the years 2013 to 2017 five seasons with a total of 50 episodes from the transmitter A & E was produced. The series tells the prehistory of Robert Bloch's novel Psycho , which was made into a film by Alfred Hitchcock in 1960 . However, the series sets the plot in today's time and is therefore not to be viewed as a direct prequel to the film or the novel, but merely takes up its motifs. It was produced, among others, by Carlton Cuse , who was previously involved in the series Lost .

The series ended with the fifth season in 2017.

action

season 1

After the death of her husband, Norma Bates moves with her 17-year-old son Norman from Arizona to White Pine Bay, Oregon , where she bought the Seafairer Motel and a house at a foreclosure sale. Norman is quickly spotted and approached by popular girls in town and invited to a party. While Norman is at the party, former home and motel owner Keith Summers breaks into the house. Norma tries to defend herself and calls for Norman's help. Norman is just coming home when the homeowner rapes his mother and knocks him to the ground. After Summers comes to and wants to get up, Norma finally stabs him with a knife. Together with Norman she carries the corpse into the bathtub in order to finally remove the traces. While tearing out the carpet, Norman finds a sketchbook with some drawings depicting women being tortured. A short time later, the Bates get a visit from two local police officers who conduct a routine examination and almost discover the body. Norman and his mother then sink the body in the harbor.

A short time later, Dylan, Norman's half-brother, reaches the new home of Norma and Norman, and new tensions arise. Soon after, Norman has to watch the father of Bradley's friend, who is of the same age, have a car accident with severe burns all over his body and is soon put into an artificial coma before he dies. Shortly after his death, Norman comes closer to Bradley and they sleep together. But Norman's strong affection for Bradley is only one-sided and Norman is rejected by her. Instead, Emma, a classmate with CF syndrome , builds strong feelings for Norman and increasingly seeks his closeness. Norman tells her about the book with the drawings of the tortured women. Emma finds out that the woman portraying what happened really exists. Norman finds the girl in the basement of Zack Shelby, a deputy who began a relationship with his mother while looking for the Summers belt, which Shelby took when police raided the Bates' home. Norman and Emma take the girl to the motel and hide her there. Norma is eventually confronted with the truth that Shelby was holding an Asian woman as a sex slave. When Shelby finds out that the Bates are hiding the girl, a dramatic confrontation ensues, in which Shelby is shot and killed by Dylan. Sheriff Romero takes the blame for Shelby's death and even assists Norma by claiming Shelby was responsible for Summer's death.

Shortly after Shelby's death, a man moves into room # 9 who lived there regularly during Summer's lifetime. After a few incidents, Norma feels threatened by him and expels him from the motel. The man begins to play psychological games with her that the police do not try to stop because she doesn't believe Norma. In addition, the story of Shelby's death is making the rounds in the city, as a result no restaurant wants to advertise the motel and the reservations are not made either. The man, Jake Abernathy, eventually blackmailed Norma. He's asking for $ 150,000 that Summers had hidden somewhere. Norma tells Romero about it, who assures her that he will take care of it. At the agreed meeting point, Norma watches Romero shoot Abernathy, knowing that she is watching him.

Norman goes to a school ball with Emma. However, when she notices his strong affection for Bradley, she decides to leave the ball after an argument. Bradley's friend then beats Norman in front of the gym. On the way home his teacher, Miss Watson, speaks to him and takes him home to treat his wound. When Norman then watches her move, his mother appears to him - as has often happened in recent events - and tells him that he knows what to do. In the final minutes of season one, Norman walks into the Seafairer Motel property and is hugged by his mother, who tells him everything will be fine now. The viewer then sees the body of Miss Watson.

season 2

Bradley attempts suicide after Miss Watson's funeral. Four months later, the Bates Motel has become a successful vacation destination, but Norma worries about her son, who spends a lot of time in the graveyard at Miss Watson's grave and finds it difficult to process her death. So while she is worried about him, she has to face another challenge: The construction of the expressway begins earlier than planned and thus endangers the success of the motel. In the meantime, Dylan finds out that Bradley's father was having an affair with Miss Watson, and when her boyfriend, Gil, found out, he killed Mr. Martin. Dylan tells Bradley about his discovery, who kills Gil and then asks Norman for help. Norman hides Bradley in the basement. Zane, Dylan's new drug lord and boss, suspects the rival drug clan (Ford) killed Gil. After the semen in Miss Watson's vagina was assigned to the stoner Kyle, he was arrested. In addition to the sperm with its DNA, sperm from another unknown person was discovered. Bradley decides to leave town and is driven to a bus stop by Dylan. Meanwhile, Norma's brother Caleb comes to town and looks for the Bates Motel . However, Norma throws him out again when he reaches the motel. Caleb meets Dylan and tells him how he would have protected Norma from Norma and Dylan's brutal father back then. Dylan eventually defends Caleb from his mother. But she finally admits in an argument that her brother raped her in her childhood and is in truth Dylan's father. Angry and confused, he leaves the motel and meets Caleb again the following day, who wants to take him fishing. But when Dylan asks him about the rape of his mother and reveals to him that he is his son, he denies the allegations and says that everything did not happen as shown. In addition, Norma slept with a guy in high school and he was the father. Spurred on by the anger, Norman locates the motel where Caleb has stayed and falls into a kind of trance in which he tries to confront him and then tries to kill him. But Caleb gets ahead of him and rams him to the ground. Cody Brennan, Norman's new girlfriend and supermarket clerk, picks him up in a café from which she has been called and discovers that Norman is in a trance and hardly shows any movements.

Norman admits to Cody that he's had blackouts in the past and can only remember fragments, but he demands that she never tell anyone, especially his mother. Sheriff Alex Romero is staying at the motel after his house was burned down by new drug lord Zane. After a position in the city council has become vacant, Norma tries to apply for it with Christine's help and gets it, but this is due to the contact with Nick Ford, who exerts a great influence in the city. Meanwhile, Norman suffers another blackout while with Cody. Fearing that he might harm himself or someone else while he's having these blackouts, she breaks her silence to Emma, who tells Norman's mother. Angry, Norman attacks Cody and wakes her father with the roar. He grabs Cody and when Norman pushes him away from her, he falls down the stairs to the basement and breaks his neck.

Norman is questioned about the case at the Presidium and his DNA is also recorded. Cody confides in Norman that his mother is hiding something from him related to his blackouts. After her father dies, she leaves town and lives with her aunt in Indiana . Norman is released by the police soon after. The death of Cody's father is classified as an accident. Sheriff Romero got a call that evening from his colleague who was further investigating Norman's DNA and found that the sperm with the second DNA discovered in Miss Watson could be attributed to Norman Bates. Meanwhile, Zane raids one of Nick Ford's hideouts and kills his men. Nick Ford then contacts Dylan, who instructs him to kill Zane because otherwise his family would be in danger. Since Norma doesn't want to tell her son what's wrong with him, Norman builds more and more distance to her. After an argument in the evening, Norma leaves the house in anger and sleeps with George, giving Nick Ford the opportunity to kidnap her son. This is hidden in a shack in the forest, where he falls back into a trance and can remember the night of Miss Watson's murder. Norma receives a call from Nick explaining that he has her son and will not release him until Dylan has killed Zane, otherwise Norman would die.

When Dylan goes to Zane's hideout and is unable to kill him, he goes to Nick Ford's house. Dylan tells Ford where Zane is. He couldn't kill him because the house is guarded by heavily armed men. When Nick Ford tries to hunt down Dylan, Dylan manages to disarm Nick and kill him instead. Together with Alex Romero, he then goes in search of Norman and finally finds him in the forest. Both deliver Norman to the hospital and then make their way to Jody, Zane's sister, Dylan's boss and thus drug lord, who calls her brother and lures him to her place under an excuse. He suspects the ambush, however, and goes at his sister with a loaded gun and kills her after she cut him in the arm with a knife. Sheriff Romero clears up the situation by shooting Zane in the back with a shotgun .

In the hospital, Norman tries to tell his mother about his "dream" while he was locked in the shed, but she stops him and tells him not to think about it anymore. But since Romero wants clarification in the Miss Watson case, he orders an unofficial polygraph test to reveal whether Norman killed Miss Watson and Romero has thus put an innocent behind bars, or is innocent. While he is being asked the crucial question, Norman falls back into a trance and meets his mother, who tells him that she killed Miss Watson. So Norman answers with a "no" and the test recognizes the answer as truth.

season 3

Norman Bates' senior year of high school begins. When Blair Watson appears bleeding during his lunch break in the canteen, his mother Norma Bates decides to teach him at home in the future. After Norma's mother dies, her brother Caleb appears in White Pine Bay and seeks contact with Dylan. Norman befriends Annika Johnson, who has checked into the Bates Motel for a few nights. However, it later disappears without a trace. Norma worries about Annika and searches her abandoned motel room. She found an invitation to an event in a dubious men's club. She sneaks up to the event, but Sheriff Romero catches her and promises to find Annika. Romero later asks Norma to identify the body of a young woman. To Norma's relief, the corpse is not Annika. Romero meets with Bob Paris, who runs the men's club, to get information about Annika. Norma meets psychology professor James Finnigan at Community College, who offers her his help. Norman has another blackout and goes into the bathtub, hoping to remember if he had anything to do with Annika's disappearance. Norma saves him from drowning and then goes down to the motel. Annika arrives there with a gunshot wound, gives Norma a USB stick and dies. Norma is determined to crack the password-protected USB stick and asks Dylan if he can help her.

One night, Norman follows Dylan to his hut and discovers Caleb. He threatens Dylan to tell her mother, but Dylan asks him not to so as not to endanger the good relationship that has developed between Dylan and Norma. Bob searches the motel office looking for the USB drive. Later, a man pushes Norma off the street and tells her to give Bob the stick. Dylan insists that Norma give the drive to Romero. Norman is puzzled by recent events - he thinks he has already informed Norma of Caleb's whereabouts. Romero meets up with Bob again, who admits he wants the flash drive back but does not reveal what's on it. Dylan's friend Gunner decrypts the USB stick and finds a financial book from the city's illegal drug trade. Norma negotiates with Bob; he agrees to the erection of a billboard near the bypass - in exchange for the USB stick. When Norma learns of Caleb's return, she packs a suitcase and storms out. When she arrives in Portland, she buys a new outfit, trades in her car and ends up at James' house, where she confesses that Norman killed his father during one of his blackouts. Dylan struggles with Norman's separation anxiety; during Norma's absence, Norman takes on her personality and wears her clothes.

Romero is shot and taken to hospital. The new sheriff candidate, Marcus Young, visits him and tells him that his time as sheriff is coming to an end. Romero follows Marcus to the parking garage and kills him. Norma realizes that she is still a mother and returns home. She agrees to her sons' request to meet with Caleb, who breaks down and apologizes when she comes to him.

Dylan and Emma get closer. Dylan learns from Emma's father that she is much sicker than she admits. Romero discovers his mother's name in the financial book that was on the USB stick. He confronts his father in prison. His father used his mother's name to get drugs into the prison. After being attacked by Norman, James tells Norma that Norman urgently needs help. Norma cooks a family dinner to get closer to Norman. To Norman's displeasure, she invites Caleb; Dylan invites Emma, and Romero is there too. Bob kidnaps and tortures James for information on Norma. He tells Romero about Norma's relationship with James and that Norman killed his father. Romero ends his friendship with Norma when she claims her husband died in an accident. James tells Norma that he told Bob everything and flees town. Dylan takes a risky job to raise money for Emma's lung transplant. After a blackout, Norman meets Bradley, who has returned to town. After discovering that Bradley's mother quickly got over her "death", Bradley tries to seduce Norman. Norma appears to him and he leaves the room.

Norma tells Bob that she will give him the flash drive, but he says that she has nothing more to negotiate with him. Desperate, Norma searches Romero's house to find the USB stick. From Romero she learns that the stick is already being investigated by the DEA. A heated argument breaks out as Romero wants Norma to tell the truth about her husband's death. She eventually says they both know who killed him. Before Caleb leaves town, he tells Norma about Norman that he has taken on her personality and attacked him. Dylan gives Emma's father the money for the lung transplant, but later receives a call from him and learns that Emma has disappeared. Dylan finds her and she tells him about her fears about the operation. Then the two kiss. Romero calls Bob to warn him of the imminent arrest. Bob goes to the marina and finds Romero there, who shoots him. Norman plans to leave town with Bradley and argues with his mother about his mental health. She knocks Norman out and pulls him into the basement. Norman escapes and escapes with Bradley. In Norma's personality, he pulls Bradley out of the car and kills her. He then rolls the car into the bay - he and his "mother" watch the car sink.

The season premiere of the second season was on March 3, 2014 and was seen by 3.07 million viewers, which corresponds to a target group rating of 1.3.

reception

The series' first season has a metascore of 66, based on 34 reviews. The first broadcast of the first episode broke the previous records of a self-produced series on A&E with over 3 million viewers. On April 8, 2013, A&E President Bob DeBitetto personally confirmed that Bates Motel will continue into a second season due to the high ratings. This was broadcast from March 3, 2014.

Differences to the novel and the films

  • While the house and the motel show strong similarities with the motifs of the film by Alfred Hitchcock from 1960, the interior floor plans in particular have some deviations. The bathtub and toilet in the motel rooms are installed differently than in the film, and the motel's facade and veranda appear larger than in the 1960 model. The stairs leading up to the house also show some differences. The distribution of space on the first floor in the house is also different. In the film, Norma Bates' room is much larger.
  • The character drawing is optically based on the original film. While Norman Bates is described in the book as fat and not very handsome, Freddie Highmore has some visual similarities to Anthony Perkins , who played the same role in the film adaptation of the novel.
  • In the film, Norman tells that his father died when he was five years old. In the series, Norman is already 17 after his father died six months.
  • In the movie, the Bates Motel is in California , while in the series it is set in the fictional town of White Pine Bay , Oregon .
  • While the film is set around 1960, the plot of the series has been moved into the 21st century.
  • In Psycho II , Norma Bates has a sister named Emma Spool. In the series, Norma's brother Caleb appears instead from the second season. No kinship of Norman Bates is examined further in the novels.
  • While Norma Bates was probably an old woman in the film (the gray hair of the corpse, the voice imitated by Norman and the dialogues), she is still quite young in the series when she dies (41).
  • In the legendary shower scene, Norman does not kill Marion Crane, but Sam Loomis.
