Major studio

As a major studio or Major Rental referred to the major US film studios , ie film production companies with attached film distribution , which for most of the global box office -revenues are responsible. The composition of the major studios has changed several times over the past few decades. These studios have come together to form the Motion Picture Association of America .

In the prime time of the classic Hollywood era , film companies were designated as major studio, which showed a vertical integration of film production , distribution and cinemas . These were the so-called Big Five : Paramount , Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer , Warner Brothers , 20th Century Fox and RKO . Film companies that did not operate their own cinemas were called mini-majors.
