The German theatrical release was March 8, 2007.

action

Around 500 years before Christopher Columbus discovered the American continent , Vikings were already making boat trips there. A Viking boy is left behind during a raid into Newfoundland after refusing to kill an Indian child. Since the shaman interprets it as a sign, the boy is now taken in and raised by the Indians of the Wampanoag tribe , although he is not accepted by many. But the shaman predicts that he will still prove himself.

15 years later, Vikings reappear and attack the village. The now adult Viking, who was given the name Geist , finds his foster parents slain and his home village in flames. As the defender of the Indians, he confronts his ancestors, led by Gunnar and his adjutant Ulfar. He leads the attackers into a mountain range where the Vikings are killed by an avalanche.

Others

  • The cost of producing the film was $ 30 million (according to other sources it was $ 45 million).
  • Worldwide, the film grossed 31 million dollars a, including 10.2 million in the United States .
  • The writers of the film were well aware that Vikings really didn't wear horns on their helmets. However, they decided to do this because the Vikings on the one hand look more frightening ( dehumanization ) and on the other hand, so as not to disappoint the audience in this regard.
  • At the beginning of 2007, the trailer caused unintentional amusement in some cinemas and feature pages with the phrase “Coming soon to the cinema. 2006 after Christ. ", Which was supposed to evoke a historical atmosphere, but failed precisely because of the wrong use of the Latin genitive (correctly it should read:" 2006 after Christ "). The tenor of the corresponding reviews can be summarized as follows: “If such easily avoidable mistakes happen in the trailer, the film cannot be good.” A similar lapse had already occurred during the promotion of the film Mona Lisa's smile .
  • In order to look even bigger and stockier, the actors of the Vikings wore ice hockey armor under their costumes.
  • At the preview, when asked about his motivation for the film, director Nispel replied that he had always wanted to see Indians and Vikings on a poster.

Reviews

“Even the Norwegian original was really not blessed with the most profound of all stories, but under Nispel the mystical legend degenerates into an extremely simple die -hard version. […] So one looks for tension and atmosphere in vain for a long time, only during the showdown in the last 20 minutes does the film succeed in forcing its sparse plot into a functioning dramaturgical framework. But the fact that you still have a little bit of excitement at the end hardly makes up for the previously so widespread boredom. Weak actors, a hectic and often aimless staging, the misplaced optics and the plot reduced to an absolute minimum make Pathfinder an apocalypto for the poor. "

- Christoph Petersen : filmstarts.de

“What can no longer be made up for in dramatic moments should at least really be put in the sand: Uninspired, mediocre choreographed cinema and often clearly visible digital post-production frenzy result in a bland Indian stew. The fact that the story has to struggle with numerous implausible moments and that it avails itself in abundance from the quotes kitchen of other films does not make the boy scout any better. Nispel serves blue-tinged and coarse-grained natural meat platter without tension. "

- Rudolf Inderst : filmspiegel.de

"Rump cinema pieced together without sense, purpose and dramaturgy based on a Norwegian fantasy film of the same name from 1987. Even the depictions of violence that serve as the raison d'etre for the film are barely noticeable because of the random editing."
