Ralf Moeller (* 12. January 1959 as Ralf Rudolf Möller in Recklinghausen ) is a German - American actor , former bodybuilder and Mr. Universe . He became internationally known for his supporting role in the monumental film Gladiator , which appeared in 2000, alongside Oscar winner Russell Crowe .

Career

The early years

Moeller was born on January 12, 1959 in Recklinghausen as the son of Ursula and Helmut Möller. From the age of seven he was a swimmer. He completed his training as a swimming master and swimming instructor in his hometown of Recklinghausen. He dedicated himself to boxing for two years before moving to bodybuilding in the mid-1970s . Moeller did his military service from 1979 to 1981 with the Pipeline Pioneer Battalion 840 in Wuppertal and trained during this time at the Federal Training Center in Leverkusen in the disciplines of the shot put and discus under coach Peter Ogiolda. He ended his military service as a corporal in the reserve.

Bodybuilder Years (1977-1989)

At the age of 17 he discovered his passion for bodybuilding and was German champion in this discipline in 1984. In 1986 he was named Mr. Universe (world champion title). In 1986, the IFBB conducted the Mr. Universe election for the first time doping tests were carried out by the IOC ( Manfred Donike ). Moeller was therefore the first Mr. Universe to be tested according to the rules of the IOC and to win the title. In 1988, the Mr. Olympia elections followed. To this day, Moeller is one of the greatest bodybuilding champions in the world at 1.96 m tall. In 1988, in the Mr. Olympia election, he weighed approx. 131 kg.

In June 1989 Moeller ended his career as a bodybuilder in order to devote himself to his acting career.

Acting career

Ralf Moeller was at the crime scene for the first time in 1988 : to see Broken Blossoms with Götz George and Eberhard Feik . A year later, in 1989, he starred in Cyborg and in 1992 on the side of Dolph Lundgren and Jean-Claude Van Damme in Universal Soldier by Roland Emmerich . A year later he played the villain Brakus as an opponent to Phillip Rhee and Eric Roberts in Best of the Best 2 - The Invincible . After Cyborg and Universal Soldier , this was his third appearance in an American film and the second supporting role.

His greatest and most popular film roles to date include those in Ridley Scott's Gladiator (2000), in which he played the gladiator Hagen alongside Oscar winner Russell Crowe , and his role in The Scorpion King from 2002. Since the supporting role in Gladiator Moeller is often adorned with the name “the gladiator” in the German press. Alongside these two films, he starred in The Viking Sagas and Conan the Adventurer . The series ran from 1997 to 1998.

Ralf Moeller continued his acting career in the film El padrino (2004), a sequel to The Bad Pack , in which he played the special agent Kurt Mayer. In 2005 he played alongside Rosanna Arquette as Bruno in My Suicidal Sweetheart. In the film Bierfest (2006) - with Donald Sutherland and Jürgen Prochnow among others - Moeller played the role of Hammacher. That same year, 2006, he starred in Ozzie the Koala Bear , in which actors such as Joan Collins also starred , and in Seed in the role of Warden Arnold Calgrove. Pathfinder followed in 2007, and Ralf Moeller played Officer John in Postal . In the following years he worked in Alone in the Dark II (2008), Dejection (2009) until he appeared in both The Sword and the Sorcerer II and The Tourist in 2010 . He also won the Teen Choice Awards for Best Action Actor. In 2014 Ralf Moeller played in Love, Hate & Security .

In addition to these US films, Moeller also had many (guest) roles in German productions. He played the leading role in the television film Der Superbulle und die Halbstarken (2000, almost 4 million viewers) produced for RTL . He also played the leading role in Hai-Alarm auf Mallorca (2003). Hai-Alarm is one of the most successful RTL in-house productions for many years (almost 7 million viewers). In addition to a guest role (Ferox) in Held der Gladiatoren (2003), Moeller also played King Thorklit in Die Nibelungen in the same year . In 2008 he was seen in Far Cry , a German-Canadian production in which Til Schweiger also played, and in Time of the Comet as Freiherr von Keittel. He also appeared in the television series The Coast Guard and Alarm for Cobra 11 - The Autobahn Police.

Ralf Moeller was also seen in music videos like the one for Bon Jovi's song “Say it isn't so” (2000) together with Claudia Schiffer , Emilio Estevez and Arnold Schwarzenegger . He also played in the video for “ Maria (I Like It Loud) ” by the German techno band Scooter . He also worked as a spokesman for the German techno-trance music project E Nomine ("Schwarze Sonne" and "Der Turm").

Moeller moved from Germany to Los Angeles in 1992 with his wife Annette, whom he met in 1984 . He has two daughters. He has lived separately from his wife since the beginning of 2013.

As of April 2014, Moeller has had both German and US citizenship . He is friends with Arnold Schwarzenegger .

Social commitment and honors

In September 2006, Ralf Moeller and Federal Family Minister Ursula von der Leyen (CDU) started the “Strong Types” initiative, which aims to convey a positive attitude towards life to children in socially disadvantaged areas. Against the background of his participation in the filming of the computer game Postal , which was indexed by the BPJM , his commitment as a role model for young people against the background of the debate about computer games with depictions of violence at the time came under criticism. Since March 2007, the campaign under the motto “Strong guys ... learn for life”, sponsored by the employers' association Gesamtmetall , has been continued with eight other events at hotspot schools. Because of this commitment, he was awarded the Kind Award by Kinderlachen .

In May 2008 he was the first German actor to visit German soldiers in Afghanistan for a week and on this occasion handed over sponsored fitness equipment for troop support worth € 30,000.

Ralf Moeller also supports Titus Dittmann's “skate-aid” organization as an ambassador and active supporter. Skate-aid supports national and international humanitarian projects for children and young people and has been awarded the “Laureus Media Prize” for their work in Afghanistan and Africa, including Uganda , Tanzania , Kenya and South Africa .

On January 14, 2010, Prime Minister Jürgen Rüttgers awarded him the Order of Merit of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia .

In August 2017 Ralf Moeller published a video clip together with the aid organization Weißer Ring under the title “Be strong, get help”. In the video he draws attention to the topic of violence against men and encourages male victims to seek professional help after a crime.
