The Gladiator Hero is a TV movie from the year 2003 . The historical material is a co-production by RTL and ORF and tells the story of revenge of a young Germanic gladiator in the 1st century AD.

The brothers Germanus and Ceradoc, two Germanic prisoners, are said to serve as cannon fodder for the star gladiator Lagos in the port city of Puteoli during a gladiator fight . The Germanic peoples are defeated, but hold up so bravely in the fight that they are pardoned by the organizer. But the bloodthirsty Lagos gives in to the audience's wishes and executes the defenseless Ceradoc. Germanus, however, is carried off the field seriously wounded. The young German has aroused the interest of two spectators; of Lanistas Palaestrio and his trainer Galenus. When Palaestrio buys the butcher Lagos for his arena in Augusta Treverorum ( Trier ), he insists on receiving Germanus as a bonus.
Together with his newly signed slaves - on the way extended by Germanus' sister Rhihanna - Palaestrio travels to the Roman occupied Germania. Germanus wants to avenge the death of his brother, but his mentor Galenus instructs him to train first before challenging the mighty Lagos. Germanus does not tell his sister who killed Ceradoc - and thus has to watch Rhihanna succumb to the charm of Lagos of all things and fall in love with her own brother's murderer. When Rhihanna finds out, she attacks her lover. But the attack fails, as does the subsequent escape of the siblings from the gladiator school.
As punishment for their offenses, brother and sister are sent into battle against each other: either one kills the other - or both are executed. Rhihanna sacrifices herself by throwing herself into her brother's sword. Because ultimately only he is able to defeat Lagos. In fact, Germanus can prevail in the dramatic final battle. He has taken revenge, but he remains a slave: his career as a gladiator has only just begun.
background
The film was shot in autumn 2002 by UFA Filmproduktion in Malta and in Puy du Fou , France . At the time, Held der Gladiatoren was the most expensive RTL production of all time with a budget of 5.5 million euros and was only overtaken by Hai-Alarm on Mallorca .
The film was originally planned as a pilot for a television series of the same name that was to take place in the gladiatorial school of the Palaestrio.
The title song Free Like the Wind , written by Dieter Bohlen and sung by Alexander Klaws , took first place in the German charts for two weeks (Austria and Switzerland: 2nd place).
