International Federation of Bodybuilding & Fitness

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The International Federation of Bodybuilding & Fitness ( IFBB ) is a bodybuilding association based in Madrid . It has 183 national sub-associations worldwide.

Competitions

IFBB is responsible for the Mr. Olympia , World Amateur Bodybuilding Championships , and Ms. International Competitions . The IFBB's first competition was the election of Mr. America in 1949 . This angered the former association AAU so much that they forbade any of its members to compete in the Mr. America competition.

history

The association was founded in 1946 as the International Federation of Bodybuilders by Ben and Joe Weider . Until 1940, the bodybuilding scene was under the control of the Amateur Athletic Union (AAU). The Weiders decided to found the IFBB because they believed that the AAU was only interested in marketing weightlifting , not bodybuilding.

In 1969 he became a member of the General Association of International Sports Federations (GAISF), now Sportaccord . Since the 1980s, the association tried to be accepted as an Olympic sport . A demonstration of a competition was promised and was designed for the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens , but ultimately failed due to a rejection. Bodybuilding was, however, represented on various occasions at the World Games .

In November 2004 the IFBB Congress voted to rename the International Federation of Bodybuilding & Fitness . The logo and the abbreviation "IFBB" remained unaffected.
