Joe Weider
Josef Edwin "Joe" Weider (born November 29, 1919 in Montreal , Canada ; † March 23, 2013 in Los Angeles , United States ) was a Canadian entrepreneur , bodybuilder and pioneer of weight training .
Life
Weider's parents came from Poland and were of the Mosaic faith . He grew up in Québec, Canada and was interested in weight training very early on, which he initially did with the help of self-made dumbbells made from car tires. At the age of 14 he finally published the first issue of the now internationally known specialist magazine Muscle & Fitness .
In 1946, he and his brother Ben Weider founded what is now the International Federation of Bodybuilding & Fitness (IFBB) and initiated the prestigious Mr. Olympia competition . In the 1950s he met his future wife Betty Brosmer, who was known as a highly paid pin-up girl and married him in 1961. He had his financial breakthrough as a pioneer of professional bodybuilding with the organization of international competitions and the publication of numerous specialist magazines and training programs . He was also the first to establish the mail order business of dietary supplements for bodybuilders. From the 1970s he also worked as a sponsor of Arnold Schwarzenegger , whom he first invited to the United States to train in 1968. Filmmaker James Bidgood published many photographs in Weider's magazines during his time as a photographer.
On March 23, 2013, Weider died of heart failure .

In 2018, director George Gallo filmed the lives of Joe and Ben Weider under the title "Bigger - The Joe Weider Story".
