A lapse ( the , latin for " gaffe ", plural : LAPSUS with long u ) is an (often minor) involuntary error .

One differentiates:

  • the Lapsus Calami (from Latin calamus , writing tube ') - a typo . There are also the variants Lapsus manus (from Latin manus 'hand') and Lapsus clavis (from Latin clavis 'key') - the latter means a typo on a keyboard .
  • the Lapsus Linguae (from Latin lingua 'tongue', 'language') - a promise to oneself, a speech error or slip of the tongue. The Lapsus linguae is often equated with the Freudian slip of the tongue .
  • the Lapsus Memoriae (from Latin memoria , memory ') - a memory or memory error.
