Alcatraz is an American mystery series with science fiction elements by Elizabeth Sarnoff , Steven Lilien and Bryan Wynbrandt , which was produced in 2011/2012 by Warner Bros. Television and Bad Robot Productions for the US broadcaster Fox . It is about a 50-year-old incident on the prison island of Alcatraz , in which a group of convicts and guards disappeared without a trace and now reappears in the present. It started on January 16, 2012 with a double episode on Fox.

concept

"On March 21, 1963, Alcatraz officially closed due to rising costs and decrepit facilities. All the prisoners were transferred off the island. Only that's not what happened. Not at all." German version: “On March 21, 1963, Alcatraz was officially closed. All prisoners were moved from the island. However, that's not the truth at all. "

With these introductory words, originally spoken by Sam Neill , every episode of Alcatraz begins . In the individual episodes, so-called flashbacks are shown, which illuminate the previous history of the returnee. In the German version, the episodes are titled after the person you are looking for in this episode. In the original the title sequence is an exception, it is simply called "Pilot".

action

In an incident almost 50 years ago, more precisely on the night of March 20, 1963, all 302 people on the prison island of Alcatraz, including 256 convicts and 46 guards , disappeared without a trace. When these reappear in the present, the FBI is investigating the case. First of all, the returnees have to be tracked down and recaptured. In addition, the FBI tries to explain the sudden disappearance from then and the return now.

The federal agents are supported by the comic lover and Alcatraz expert Dr. Diego Soto and Detective Rebecca Madsen of the San Francisco Police Department.

characters

Rebecca Madsen
Rebecca is a young and clever woman who was a stubborn detective at the police station in San Francisco and is engaged to Jimmy. After her parents died, her father's friend, Ray, raised her. Since her grandfather and surrogate father were guards in Alcatraz, she quickly developed an interest in the Alcatraz case. She later learns that her grandfather, Tommy Madsen, was not a guard, but an inmate who also disappeared. She also finds out that Ray is her great-uncle and therefore Tommy's brother. In the series finale, she is fatally injured by Tommy.
Dr. Diego "Doc" Soto
Diego, simply called Doc by everyone, is an intelligent scientist and comic book store operator. He's a mix of geek and hippie and also an expert in the history of Alcatraz, on which he has written several books. He studied in addition to the history of Alcatraz and criminal justice , in which he the academic degree Ph.D. owns.
Emerson Hauser
Emerson is a former San Francisco detective and is now the head of a secret special unit for the FBI. He has an extraordinary exuding authority and a penetrating mind. As it turns out in the course of the investigation, he is familiar with the secret history of Alcatraz, as he was a guard himself, and even expected the arrival of the prisoners.
Lucille "Lucy" Banerjee
Lucy is Emerson's lab technician and has been a member of his task force for some time. We learn that she worked as a psychologist on Alcatraz in the 1960s and, like the 302 people who disappeared, has not aged.
Ray Archer
Ray is a retired Alcatraz detective and warden and Rebecca's surrogate father after their parents die. After retiring, he now owns and operates a police bar where he works as a bartender . As it turns out, he's Tommy's brother and thus Rebecca's great-uncle.
Edwin James
Edwin was Alcatraz's prison director in the 1960s. Until the closure of the maximum security prison in 1963, he worked closely with EB as director in Alcatraz. Because of his strict and sometimes unscrupulous approach, he was feared by most of the inmates. He's been dead for a few years now.
Elijah Bailey "EB" Tiller
Elijah was Edwin's right-hand man and a ruthless prison guard on Alcatraz in the 1960s. He started as a guard in the maximum security prison when he was 18 years old. He not only enjoyed his position of power, but also played it off over and over again with the inmates. In the present, he is murdered at the beginning of the series by a returnees named Jack Sylvane, because he previously suffered agony in prison.
