Jason Butler Harner (born October 9, 1970 in Elmira , New York ) is an American actor.

Harner grew up in northern Virginia and was involved in drama from an early age. He attended TC Williams High School, where he led a theater circle, of which he was also president. After graduation, he temporarily worked as a usher at the Eisenhower Theater in Washington, DC He attended Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) and graduated in 1992 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts. After graduation, he made his debut at the Actors Theater of Louisville and moved to New York City . There he took part in an acting program at the Tisch School of the Arts in 1997 . From 2007 to 2008, Harner taught at the VCU as a guest lecturer.

Harner made a name for himself mainly as a stage actor and Shakespeare interpreter, a wider audience he only became known through his role as the mass murderer Gordon Northcott in the film The Strange Son .
