action

Private detective Mick St. John was turned into a vampire by his ex-wife Coraline on their wedding night. That was 55 years ago, and since then Mick has lived in Los Angeles trying to control his dangerous second nature. More than 22 years ago, Coraline kidnapped a little girl in order to give Mick a family and to bind him to her. Mick couldn't bear the thought that a child should be changed because of him and killed his wife to save the child. Since then, Mick has worked as a private detective to atone for his many crimes and no longer drinks directly from people, only canned food. His best friend Josef tries to bring him back to the joys of life. At the beginning of the series, he meets Beth Turner, a mere mortal, and begins to fall in love with her. As it later turns out, she was the little girl he killed his wife to save. Later, however, a woman appears who looks very similar to his ex-wife, but she is a normal mortal. It turns out that there is a cure that will stop vampirism for a time, and it really is Coraline. Mick also becomes mortal for a while with Coraline's help, but has to give this up to save Beth. At the end of the only season he confesses his love to Beth.

Characters

main characters

Mick St. John

Mick St. John is a private investigator and was turned into a vampire by Coraline on his wedding night in 1952. She taught him the basics, but Mick could never forgive her for turning him into a "monster". They split up and Mick started working as a private detective.

In 1985 he was put on a kidnapping and found out that Coraline had kidnapped a child in order to have a family life with him. But Mick refused, freed the girl and left Coraline in the burning house. Since that day he has tried to help people wherever he can. He never took his eyes off the girl - Beth - and watched her grow up.

Mick is friends with the vampire Josef. Even if their approach to life is fundamentally different, they are still united by a deep friendship. Since Mick works for people, he has an aversion to blood sucking and feeds almost exclusively on blood.

Beth Turner

Beth works as a reporter for the internet magazine BuzzWire. She was saved by Mick as a little girl when Coraline kidnapped her. Since then she has raved about her guardian angel, but at first she has no idea that it was Mick who saved her.

Her relationship with Josh Lindsey is shaken as she becomes attracted to Mick.

In the course of the series, she quits BuzzWire about Mick and starts working for the prosecutor as a civilian investigator.

Josef Kostan

Josef was born in 1599 and is a successful businessman. He is Mick's best friend, lives in a skyscraper and prefers an expensive lifestyle. In contrast to Mick, he likes to drink fresh blood from attractive blood donors and has many parties.

He is very critical of relationships between people and vampires, as he himself once made the mistake of falling in love with a person. He tried to turn Sarah into a vampire, but since something went wrong, she has been in a coma ever since. However, it is not aging, so Joseph still hopes to find a solution one day.

Coraline Duvall / Morgan Vincent

Coraline is Mick's ex-wife. She met him at a party where Mick was engaged as a musician. On their wedding night, she turned him into a vampire to stay with him forever. But Mick left her because he couldn't forgive her. To win him back, she kidnapped a little girl in 1985 so that they could start a family together. Mick freed the girl and left Coraline in the flames. It seems like she's dead.

22 years later she returns as a person under the name "Morgan Vincent". It is only in the 9th episode that Mick learns that Morgan and Coraline are identical. She stole a cure from her brother Lance that temporarily turns you into a human. Mick doesn't tell her at first, but later she lets him in and tells him that the mixture of seven siblings from the bloodline of Louis XVI . was created. She is thus a member of the French nobility. Lance catches her and takes her to France to be punished.

Supporting characters

  • Maureen 'Mo' Williams (8 episodes): Beth's editor-in-chief at BuzzWire.
  • Lieutenant Carl Davis (7 episodes): Beth's contact with the police.
  • Josh Lindsey (7 episodes): Beth's partner. He worked as a district attorney. Over time, he suspects that Beth and Mick are having a relationship. In episode 11 he dies in an assassination attempt .
  • Guillermo (5 episodes): a vampire. He works in the hospital morgue, drawing blood from the dead for himself and also selling the canned food to Mick and other vampires.
  • Logan Griffen (5 episodes): also a vampire. He spends most of his time at home playing computer games and therefore has little contact with other vampires. He is a technology freak and often gives Mick important information.
  • Benjamin Talbot (4 episodes): Josh's successor in the public prosecutor's office, who offers Beth a job.
  • Steve Balfour (4 episodes): a friend of Beth and work colleague at BuzzWire.

background

First of all, there was talk of filming the television series in the USA under the title "Twilight" . Trevor Munson wrote the script for a 14-20 minute pilot episode and premiered on Warner Bros. Television in January 2007 . Joel Silver and Gerard Bocaccio and the company Silver Pictures were added as second producers . Rod Holcomb shot the series of presentations. When CBS decided to give an order for 13 episodes, the project was renamed "Moonlight". The series of presentations was rated just one star out of four by The Futon Critic , and they advised CBS to shoot the TV series Babylon Fields . It was also recommended to re-shoot this pilot episode.

With the series Nick Knight - The Vampircop , there was already a series with a very similar plot. Even the camera work with its fast flights over the city at night is reminiscent of this vampire series from the 1990s.

Cast changes

David Greenwalt joined as a show runner in May 2007. At the same time it was announced that the pilot episode would be shot directly. For this purpose,  all roles were re-cast in June 2007 - except for the main actor Alex O'Loughlin . Shannon Lucio , Rade Sherbedgia and Amber Valletta , who played the other three main roles Beth Turner, Josef Kostan and Coraline in the presentation sequence, were replaced by Sophia Myles , Jason Dohring and Shannyn Sossamon .

David Greenwalt left the crew for health and personal reasons in July 2007 and was replaced by Chip Johannessen in August 2007.

Removal and possible continuation

On May 13, 2008, the broadcaster CBS announced that the series would be discontinued. After efforts to persuade other stations to continue the series, it was announced on June 23, 2008 in the USA that the series would definitely not be continued. A possible takeover by the pay TV broadcaster DirecTV also failed. The talks were broken off without result. On June 17, 2008 it was announced that the cable broadcaster TNT , which belongs to the Time Warner group , is interested in the takeover. In the end, however, a second season never became a reality.

Vampire picture of the series

The vampire image of the series is kept modern and shows (as was the case with Blade, among others ) now also vampires in their private and professional environment. In addition, the common notion that vampires would burn in sunlight has now been weakened, so that Mick can stay in the sunlight without suffering any major damage, but the sun still bothered him (which is also the case with Dracula, for example ). Also not new is the fact that stakes do not kill vampires, only paralyze them. This redesign of the stake was already used in the role-playing game Vampire: The Masquerade . In addition, a vampire has to stay with his newcomer until he is completely transformed, otherwise he can become uncontrollable. A vampire bite will only transform the victim if the vampire's blood gets into its circulation.
