action

Jimmy Dworski, incarcerated for car theft, wins tickets for the baseball final in a radio quiz . He escapes from prison two days before his release to watch the game, because despite the special circumstances he is not allowed to go out. On the way he finds the appointment calendar, a Filofax branded ring binder , of Spencer Barnes, a high-ranking employee in the advertising industry. Barnes was sent on a business trip by his company and had quarreled with his wife over a vacation plan. He is supposed to raise an advertising budget for 'High Quality Foods', whose Japanese board member Mr. Sakamoto and the American managing director Diane Connors he should get to know and convince. When he arrived at the destination airport, he lost his Filofax because his suitcase was lost on the flight and he only met the driver who was supposed to pick him up at the airport by chance. During the flight he met an old friend, Debbie Lipton, from school.

Dworski finds a promise of reward for an honest finder in the calendar, while Barnes finds out in the limousine that the Filofax has gone missing. When he arrived at the address given, Dworski discovered that nobody was there, because Barnes ran back to the airport to get the Filofax. Eventually Dworski discovers in the calendar the key and the instructions for the alarm system of the house, which belongs to the company owner Walter Bentley and in which Spencer Barnes should stay on his business trip. Dworski opens the house and is mistaken for Spencer Barnes because of his presence there. He attends various business appointments without denial, while the real Barnes has considerable problems in everyday life without his calendar, as all the contact details and documents for the trip were in his diary. In his role as Barnes, Dworski alienates Barnes' business partners with his open manner, but also leaves a lasting impression. He meets Jewel, Walter Bentley's daughter, with whom he starts a relationship. He asks her to come with him to the baseball game. Meanwhile, Barnes does not manage to find the house; he is also being robbed and the only thing left is Debbie Lipton's phone number. He receives support from them again and again, and she shows a personal interest in him. All attempts to meet the deadlines yourself fail. Barnes rejects Lipton's advances several times, so that Lipton finally throws him out and he makes his way to the manager's distant property on foot.

Dworski and Barnes meet there the next morning. After a fight between the two, Barnes tries to visit the business partners to clear up the mix-up. However, the confusion caused by Dworski is his undoing. He is fired from Bentley, but at the same time resigns himself out of desperation. Dworski, who now feels responsible, cancels his appointment with Jewel to cheer up Barnes and goes to the final with him. Meanwhile, Spencer Barne's wife Elizabeth has arrived at Walter Bentley's house. There she gets to know Jewel, and the two realize that they mean different Spencer Barnes, and thus no woman / lover situation has resulted. After the final, Dworski thought that he would have to go back to prison in order to be released in time. With the help of Barnes and Debbie Lipton, he disguises himself as a woman and poses as his mother to prison staff. This ruse succeeds and he is released after serving his sentence. At the end of the film, the two are hired by the Japanese client, Mr. Sakamoto, as a team for High Quality Food as the new management team for America.
