action
Caleb is a young farmer's son who lives on an Oklahoma ranch with his little sister and father . In the evening he drives to the neighboring town, where he meets the reserved Mae, who immediately appeals to him. After a short conversation, she asks Caleb to drive her home. He drives her to his ranch beforehand to show her his horse, which, however, shies away from her. Mae explains to him that horses don't like her that much. When she notices what time it is, she wants to be taken home immediately. On the way, however, Caleb stops to blackmail her for a kiss. Mae is very restless as dawn is already approaching. But in the end she kisses him and bites him in the neck. Instead of sucking it out, however, she suddenly runs away.
Increasingly weakened, Caleb makes his way home on foot because suddenly his truck doesn't start anymore. Just before he reaches the ranch, his father and sister witness him being kidnapped. People in a large camper with darkened windows drag him in and take him away. Inside are Mae and her friends who want to kill Caleb immediately. When Mae makes it clear to her friends that she has bitten him but not sucked him, they change their minds and want to give him a week to integrate into the group. To do this, he has to kill, every night, in order to survive and to belong. But he can not bring himself to what leads to the discovery of the group by sheriffs. Caleb saves the group and can iron out his mistake. But new difficulties arise when they stay in a motel where Caleb's family is also looking for him. The gang wants to kill Caleb's father and sister, Caleb doesn't want to let that happen and asks them not to do it. Caleb's sister opens the door to flee, the morning sun penetrates the room and saves her life. Caleb's family can escape and take him with them. A blood transfusion will save him from changing forever. But when his sister is kidnapped that night, he sets off with his horse to look for her. He first kills Severen by detonating a truck; the rest of the gang burns in sunlight at daybreak. This allows Caleb to save his sister and even Mae. He also performs a blood transfusion on her, which gives Mae her human life back. The film ends with Caleb soothing Mae in her fear of the rising sun.

Reviews
“With her western punk variant of Bram Stoker's novel Dracula (1897), Bigelow understands the world of vampires primarily as a hostile environment. In addition to the dangerous sunlight and the fear of not getting enough food, the narrative focuses on social adjustment mechanisms. [...] Almost perfectly neo-noir, the horror film establishes a visual language that deliberately focuses on the struggle between the (bogus) human being and his indomitable nature. "
