Jenette Elise Goldstein (born February 4, 1960 in Beverly Hills , California ) is an American film and theater actress .

life and work

Goldstein grew up in the Beverly Hills slums. At a young age, she decided to become an actress. She gained her first experience in the acting class at Beverly Hills High School, and later at the University of California, Santa Barbara . This was followed by training at the Circle in the Square Theater in New York City .

After marrying a British veterinarian, the couple moved to London together . There she completed a one-year postgraduate course at the Webber Douglas Academy of Dramatic Art . At the same time she became increasingly involved in women's bodybuilding , which she first became aware of in Hyam's Gym in East London .

Goldstein made her first film appearance in James Cameron's science fiction film Aliens - The Return, in which she played the elite soldier Private Vasquez . During the casting , she initially thought that it was a film about emigrants ( aliens = foreigners, strangers). There she wore a sleeveless blouse and her steel upper arms were the decisive factor in her getting the role of Vasquez. This role made her famous, as she and Sigourney Weaver were the first actresses to take on roles of action heroes that were previously reserved for men . In a review of the alien films in 1998, the critic Anne Blume judged that the role of Vasquez was largely reduced to the military, but was remarkably more resilient than her male comrades as a well-trained, muscle- bound " super amazon ":

“In the further course of the plot, Vasquez then falls into the Rambo role (also visually: headband, bare arms and lots of these ridiculously oversized weapons in front of the body). While male soldiers show 'female' reactions by becoming 'hysterical' in the face of the alien threat, Vasquez remains absolutely tough. "

- Anna Blume :

Goldstein himself saw Cameron's focus on female action heroes as "groundbreaking" and always saw the film as a feminist work. For her role as Vasquez she received the Saturn Award for best supporting actress that same year . James Cameron loved Goldstein's work and later cast it again in his films Terminator 2 and Titanic . In the latter, Cameron cast her as the Irish mother who travels as an emigrant on the Titanic - an obvious reference to the misunderstanding during the alien casting.

In Star Trek: Gathering of Generations , she was seen as the Enterprise B science officer in 1994.

Since the late 1990s, Goldstein has mostly only appeared in TV series. She also took on roles in the theater, such as in Arthur Miller's After the Fall .

In 2009 she founded her company Jenette Bras , with which she produces and sells brassieres in plus sizes.
