Sophie Nélisse (born March 27, 2000 in Windsor , Ontario ) is a Canadian actress . She is known for her roles in the films Monsieur Lazhar (2011) and The Book Thief (2013).

life and career

Sophie Nélisse was born in March 2000 as the daughter of a teacher in Windsor, Canada. She is of French-Canadian descent and has an older brother and a younger sister named Isabelle Nélisse , who is also active as an actress. At the age of four she moved with her family to Montreal ( Quebec ). When her older brother became interested in acting, her mother took all three siblings to a talent agent. The then seven-year-old Nélisse was then accepted into the Creative Artists Agency and received offers for commercials .

After minor guest appearances in Canadian television series , she made her film debut in 2011 in the award-winning drama Monsieur Lazhar about the Algerian elementary school teacher Bachir Lazhar ( Mohamed Fellag ) as his student Alice L'Écuyer . This role brought her not only national fame, but also a Genie Award and a Prix ​​Jutra in the Best Supporting Actress category . She received another nomination for best actress in an international feature film at the Young Artist Awards 2013 . In 2011 she was also seen in eleven episodes of the Canadian comedy series Elternalarm - The Parent family in the role of Zoé .
