In the Life of My Sister (Original title: My Sister's Keeper ) is a 2009 American drama film directed by Nick Cassavetes and starring Abigail Breslin , Sofia Vassilieva and Cameron Diaz . The feature film is based on the novel of the same name by Jodi Picoult .

action

Sara and Brian Fitzgerald and their two children Kate and Jesse lead a carefree life until one day a doctor diagnoses Kate with leukemia . When neither son Jesse nor the two parents turn out to be suitable organ donors for the child, the parents make the difficult decision to have another daughter who should be genetically perfectly adapted to the needs of their older sister. Test tube daughter Anna is now specially created as a lifeguard for Kate so that she can stay alive.

Even if Kate is the older one, her life from now on completely depends on Anna. Stem cells and bone marrow are repeatedly taken from the younger one and the two sisters have to undergo lengthy hospital stays. The parents devote their full attention to their sick daughter, which means that the two siblings receive little attention. For example, it is only noticed late that Jesse is dyslexic . Sara gradually gives up her whole personality to look after her child.

As a teenager, Kate met Taylor, who was also suffering from cancer, and fell in love with him. However, Taylor dies shortly after spending a ball night together.

When Kate's kidneys finally fail , Anna is the only possible donor, but the now 11-year-old makes a momentous decision: Although she has a very close relationship with her sister, she now refuses to provide a kidney. As a reason, she states that from now on she wants to determine her own body. Together with attorney Campbell Alexander, she is suing her own parents, although she cannot pay him. At first, Anna's mother believes that the well-known lawyer took over the case because he was out for publicity, but it turns out that Campbell has epilepsy and therefore stands up for Anna.

The two parents now take different parties. Brian begins to wonder if he and his wife were ethical , while Sara stubbornly persists in trying to save her daughter Kate. In court, Jesse reveals that the avoidance of the kidney operation is Kate's own wish, who has now given up after several therapies and wants to die in peace. She has already attempted suicide, which Anna foiled and kept from her parents. Anna's desire for self-determination was just an exaggerated motive.

Shaken, the parents accept Kate's decision. They gather at their sick bed to say goodbye. Finally, Kate sends everyone out of the room except for her mother, where she shows her a self-made book that includes her whole life by her mother's side. Sara is touched. Kate dies the following night.

Despite great sadness, the family manages to go on living and keep Kate in good memory. Sara takes on her own life again and Jesse can overcome his anger at his parents and despite his reading difficulties gets a scholarship to an art college, because it turns out that he can paint well. Every year on Kate's birthday, all family members take time off and travel together to Montana to Kate's favorite place.

Differences to the novel

The end of the film in particular is very different from the end of the novel. There, Anna is killed in a traffic accident after winning the court hearing, and her lawyer decides that Kate will receive the organs she needs for the transplant. In the film, with Kate's decision to die, the situation is illuminated differently.

The question is raised whether one can let a person die, although help is not far away, but also to what extent one can use a person as a “spare parts store”.

Reviews

“The pictures are a little too sunny and the songs too emotional for the gloom of death to be felt; that the case ends up with the judge (Joan Cusack) of all people, who has just lost a daughter, is too much of a coincidence; and the fact that hair and eyebrows go out in chemo, but not beautiful eyelashes, also seems inauthentic. All the more astonishing that Nick Cassavetes' recipe works out in the end despite the wrong notes. Because one can hardly defend oneself in this concentrated emotional attack against the tears rolling down in the audience. "

“Because he doesn't shy away from the consequences of his material. What if Kate (Sofia Vassilieva) decides, that's it now? Anyone who has experienced the premature death of a loved one can gauge the impact the film is getting at that moment. And where there is a risk of slipping into sentimentality, Abigail Breslin ensures that everything remains grounded. The 13-year-old had already put on a stunning performance in Little Miss Sunshine as an untalented Miss candidate. You can entrust everything to her. Also the life of the sister. "

“A tearful movie hit that deals with many ethical conflicts. For example, whether you can let a person die if you had the chance to save him. Which leads to the question of whether a person is allowed to serve as a spare parts store. But these conflicts are only touched on in passing. Otherwise the film would be too difficult for some viewers. "

- kulthit.de

“A prominent drama about a corrosive family conflict wrapped in a classic Hollywood dramaturgy, in which the points of view of both parties are drawn in a similarly understandable manner. The memories of their childhood together, integrated as video images, are increasingly giving way to relentless images of the hospital history of suffering, while at the same time the dark side of modern medical achievements is being explored. "
