Alpha Dog - Fatal Friendships (Original title: Alpha Dog ) is an American drama film directed by Nick Cassavetes from 2006 . The film is based on real events.

action

Truelove spends a lot of time in San Gabriel Valley together with his friends Frankie Ballenbacher, Elvis Schmidt and Tiko Martinez. He finances his way of life with drug deals. Jake Mazursky, a former member of the Truelove clique, owes him. A dispute ensues, during which Jake rages in Truelove's apartment. By chance, Truelove meets 15-year-old Zack Mazursky, Jake's half-brother, and kidnaps him. At first this kidnapping seems to be a lot of fun, because the kidnapping victim feels more and more comfortable in the group around Truelove. Zack builds a friendly relationship with Frankie in particular. The girls in the clique are also interested in Zack.

For Truelove, events are getting out of hand. On the one hand, the violent Jake is on his heels, and the police are also looking for Zack. One day he mentioned to Frankie that Zack had to be killed. Frankie thinks this is a joke at first, but Truelove is serious. He then finds a willing assistant in Elvis Schmidt. Zack is supposed to be driven to his parents' house by Frankie and Elvis. However, Elvis Schmidt has a completely different mission. At night they drive to a recreation area. Zack doesn't understand the whole thing and asks Frankie what's going on there. Frankie assures him everything will be fine. Elvis Schmidt had already made preparations and dug a grave. Once there, Zack, who is tied up by Frankie, is knocked down by Elvis with a shovel and shot.

Over the next few days, the accomplices were gradually arrested. The arrest of Johnny Truelove was to be several years in coming because he had fled to Paraguay. Frankie Ballenbacher is sentenced to life imprisonment, Elvis Schmidt to death .

Reviews

Justin Chang wrote in Variety on January 27, 2006 that the film was "standard". He praised the scene of the kidnapping and some scenes with Sharon Stone, but described one of the scenes with Stone as "grotesque". Bruce Willis seems "bored".

The Filmbewertungsstelle Wiesbaden awarded the rating “valuable”: “Actor director Nick Cassavetes staged authentically and oppressively […] The convincingly differentiated film shows 'Star' Justin Timberlake as a serious actor who fits seamlessly into the ensemble. A serious contemporary film [...] ”.

The lexicon of international film judges:

"The cinematic reconstruction of an authentic case wants to get to the bottom of the causes of youth violence in a mixture of epic drama and reality TV [...], but all too hastily assigns the blame to the adults."

Awards

Ben Foster received the Young Hollywood Award in 2006 . Justin Timberlake was nominated for the Teen Choice Award and the MTV Movie Award in 2007.

The German Film and Media Evaluation FBW in Wiesbaden awarded the film the title valuable.

background

The film is loosely based on actual events surrounding Jesse James Hollywood in August 2000 in Los Angeles . Due to a lawsuit, director and screenwriter Cassavetes had to change names and locations. For example, Jesse James became Hollywood in the movie Johnny Truelove and the Markowitz family became Mazursky. The planned theatrical release was also questionable for a long time, because the film is based on facts and the trial against Jesse James Hollywood was still ongoing. Among other things, the defendant's lawyers alleged that the jury could be influenced by the film. In December 2006, a US federal court ruled that the film could be published, albeit with a number of conditions, such as changing names and locations.

The film was shot in California and Nevada . The world premiere took place on January 27, 2006 at the Sundance Film Festival .
