Reviews

Mick LaSalle wrote in the San Francisco Chronicle that the love story is different from the usual romantic love movies. It is more lyrical, unrealistic, strangely structured. James Berardinelli found the film changed the understanding of family and love. Most characters cannot be liked. The game of Sean Penn and Robin Wright Penn, however, helps to overlook script weaknesses.

The lexicon of international films said the film was trying to find out what holds a couple of lovers together. It was carried by the "excellent" actors, although the leading actress disappointed.

Awards

Sean Penn and Thierry Arbogast won awards at the 1997 Cannes Film Festival , and the film also took part in the Palme d'Or competition. Thierry Arbogast was also nominated for the Camerimage in 1997. Robin Wright Penn was nominated for the Screen Actors Guild Award in 1998 .
