Anton Viktorovich Yelchin ( Russian Антон Викторович Ельчин , Anton Viktorovich Yeltschin ; born March 11, 1989 in Leningrad , Soviet Union ; † June 19, 2016 in Los Angeles , California ) was an American film actor .

Life

Anton Yelchin was the only child of Irina Korina and Viktor Yelchin, who immigrated to the United States when Anton was six months old. His parents are a former professional figure skating couple .

Yelchin made his film debut in 2000 at the age of eleven in the independent film A Man Is Mostly Water by Fred Parnes and made his series debut in an episode of Emergency Room . In 2002 he won the Young Artist Award for his role in Hearts in Atlantis . From then on, Yelchin, whose hobbies included playing chess , appeared in front of the camera in numerous films and television series.

He took on his first leading role in 2007 in Charlie Bartlett on the side of Robert Downey junior , Hope Davis and Kat Dennings . In 2009, Yelchin played the role of navigation officer Pavel Chekov in Star Trek , who was played in the original films by Walter Koenig . In the same year followed the role as Kyle Reese in the sequel to the Terminator series Terminator: The Redemption . In 2013 he appeared again as Chekov in Star Trek Into Darkness .

Yelchin died on June 19, 2016 at the age of 27 as a result of an accident. He was crushed by his own rolling back car at the gate of the garage entrance on his property in Studio City, Los Angeles, in the San Fernando Valley . A malfunction of the car could not be excluded.

Yelchin left behind a number of wacky, as-yet-unreleased films and series. In Star Trek Beyond , he had played the role of Chekov for the third time. As the film studio Paramount announced, there will be another Star Trek film, but according to JJ Abrams the film role of Pavel Chekov will not be re-cast. “I would say that it cannot be replaced. There will be no new casting. I can't imagine it and I think Anton deserves better, ”said Abrams.

In the Netflix cartoon series Troll Hunters by Guillermo del Toro , which has been available since December 2016, he had taken on the voice of the main character Jim. He had also completed the shooting of the psychological thriller Thoroughbreds , the science fiction film Rememory , the family drama We Don't Belong Here and the romantic drama Porto . Shortly before his death, it became known that Yelchin was also slated for a leading role in the series Mr. Mercedes , which has aired since August 2017. It is an adaptation of the novel of the same name by Stephen King . Yelchin was supposed to play the role of the psychopathic killer Brady Hartsfield.

Awards

Nominated for three Young Artist Awards , Yelchin won one of the awards in 2002 for his performance in Hearts in Atlantis . As a member of the Star Trek Ensemble, he received the BSFC Award and the DFCS Award in 2009. In 2011 he received the Spotlight Award at the Hollywood Film Awards for his portrayal of Jacob in Like Crazy (2011). He also won an award at the Hamptons International Film Festival in 2011 for the same film. For Best Actor, Yelchin won the 2014 Chicago International Film Festival Silver Hugo for the role of Quentin in Rudderless (2014).
