Rememory is an American crime film with science fiction elements from 2017 . Directed by Mark Palansky , he wrote the screenplay with Michael Vukadinovich . It play Peter Dinklage , Julia Ormond , Anton Yelchin , Henry Ian Cusick , Gracyn Shinyei and Colin Lawrence . Rememory had its world premiere on January 25, 2017 at the 2017 Sundance Film Festival .

action

After the mysterious death of a genius researcher who developed a memory instrument that can recall and record memories in the brain in great detail, Sam Bloom, who lost his brother in a car accident, investigates the murderer by looking at the memory instrument and the test subjects' records and track them down. A web of intrigue and deceit unfolds as the investigation progresses, which itself appears to have more than one purpose.

production

The film was being planned longer. In March 2012, Catherine O'Hara and Peter Dinklage were hired as actors for the project. Julia Ormond joined the cast in February 2016 . Filming in Canada ran from January 25th to February 22nd. The film production was one of the last of Anton Yelchin , who died young in an accident.

In an interview, Mark Palansky explains that during production he also collected visual memories in a kind of crowdsourcing campaign online (“ we crowdsourced memories ”). Of the cinematics used as recorded memories, two hundred were produced, some crowdsourced and some he found on Instagram . Production got in touch and got permission to use it.

distribution

The film was made available for two weeks from August 24, 2017, exclusively for free download on Google Play in 28 countries. The countries were: United States , United Kingdom , Canada , Ireland , Australia , New Zealand , Albania , Antigua and Barbuda , Belize , Botswana , Cambodia , Fiji , Iceland , Jamaica , Macedonia , Malta , Namibia , Nepal , Papua New Guinea , Philippines , Rwanda , Sri Lanka , Trinidad and Tobago , Uganda , Zambia and Zimbabwe . From September 8, 2017, Rememory was distributed by Lionsgate Premiere, a younger subsidiary of Lionsgate, in a limited release (small number of cinemas) in the USA and as video-on-demand . The film is scheduled to start in German cinemas on November 8, 2018.

criticism

Hollywood Reporter's John DeFore thinks the film works best as a Whodunit crime thriller , despite all of the strong philosophical and emotional aspects that the subject of memory technology brings with it. While some of the science fiction elements don't always seem conclusive to him, he praises the portrayal of Peter Dinklage as a sensitive, downright therapeutically gifted detective Sam Bloom.
