Charlie begins giving advice to his classmates and selling them drugs that he has his psychiatrist prescribe himself on pretexts that make him the school psychiatrist and popular. He later also follows the advice himself and develops a love affair with Susan, the school principal's daughter.

Gardner wants to break this connection, but drives his daughter further and further away from him. After Gardner forcibly breaks up a rally against camera surveillance, he is released. When Charlie wants to apologize to Gardner, he finds Gardner completely drunk and with a gun. Gardner shoots randomly in the pool and in the air, finally holding the gun close to his head. Charlie thinks Gardner suicide wants to commit, it seeks to prevent and falls into the pool. Gardner jumps after to save him. Apparently sobered up, the two speak up and then watch a school performance in which Susan took on a role.

Ronnie Scheib wrote in the magazine Variety on May 14, 2007 that the film tells a “boisterous” story and offers “disposable” moral lessons . Scheib praised the “multi-layered” teamwork between Anton Yelchin and Robert Downey junior; the portrayal of Tyler Hilton is "priceless" . Paul Sarossy filmed Toronto with the "transparent intimacy" .
