Monastery of San Pietro della Canonica is a former Cistercian abbey in Campania , Italy . It was in Amalfi in the province of Salerno .
history
Cardinal Petrus Capuanus , who came from Amalfi, founded a monastery outside Amalfi in 1212 with his brother Mansone and his nephew Giovanni in 1212, which he designated for the Canons from the Lateran, to whom the nearby, much older church of San Pietro in Toczulo was also given. The canons were then called "Canons of San Pietro" and the monastery was called "San Pietro della Canonica". The Cistercians followed them as early as 1214. The monastery, initially a priory , was subordinated to the Fossanova Abbey , from which the first abbot, Nicola da S. Germano, appointed in 1223, came. However, Clairvaux Monastery is referred to as the mother monastery in the order genealogies. In 1360 the abbot Bernardo Boninsegni was entrusted with the management of the monastery of Santa Maria di Mirteto near Pisa . Later the monastery fell into the coming . In 1583 the Capuchins succeeded the Cistercians.
