action

After a concert by the punk rock band The Ain't Rights was canceled and the replacement gig in a Mexican restaurant did not bring them any money, the group accepted the offer to perform in a rocker bar in the woods of Oregon the following day . Their audience there consists only of neo-Nazis , but the job is well paid. After the band played their cover version of the Dead Kennedy's song Nazi Punks Fuck Off on stage , the four members of the band were embroiled in a murder case. They then become involuntary hostage-takers and hold a stocky, bearded and tattooed rocker in the green room of the building, who is their life insurance. Darcy, the owner of the bar and head of a neo-Nazi association, is waiting in front of the door with his people. Darcy promises them safe conduct in exchange for the pistol they have in their possession. The four band members discuss and forge a plan how they can get out of the dangerous situation and save their lives.

Staff and cast

The director took Jeremy Saulnier , who also wrote the screenplay for the film.

Anton Yelchin took on the role of bassist for the band with Pat, Alia Shawkat played guitarist Sam, Joe Cole played the role of drummer for the band called Reece, and Callum Turner slipped into the role of Tiger, the group's lead singer. Patrick Stewart stars as the owner of the bar and leader of the White Supremacists , Darcy Banker. Imogen Poots played Amber, a friend of the murder victim.

Yelchin died at the age of 27 just a few weeks after the film opened in theaters in Germany and just a month before the world premiere of his next film Star Trek Beyond . The film actor, who was born in what was then the Soviet Union , was crushed by his own rolling back car on June 19, 2016 in the garage entrance of his home. Green Room was the last film to be released during Yelchin's lifetime. Saulnier said about working on the film after his death: "He not only put a fine balance between a tragic vulnerability and a strong physicality in the role, but also showed his infinite generosity and patience outside of the shooting."

reception

Reviews

The film was able to convince 91 percent of the critics at Rotten Tomatoes and is thus in the TOP 100 of the best rated films of 2016. In addition, the film came second in the 18th Annual Golden Tomato Awards in the category Best Horror Movie 2016 . The consensus there says: "Green Room offers merciless thrills with unusual intelligence and powerful acting élan." On Metacritic , the film received a Metascore of 79 out of 100 based on 42 reviews.

Leslie Felperin of The Hollywood Reporter says, “The way the action is cleverly executed, the tension has been built neatly and the shockers are expected to be surprising. [...] As a bonus, Saulnier and his crew have designed the building's floor plan in such a way [...] that there are also blind spots. "

Till Kadritzke from critic.de also emphasizes the dramaturgy of the film: “Saulnier takes this situation to the extreme. With stoic calm he sends us to the top of his roller coaster; we know exactly that it will be very fast as long as we are already locked in the green room and listening to the hectic dialogues. "

To the film service , the film seems unnecessarily brutal: “Exciting and oppressive thriller that concentrates on the local restrictions of its narrative premise and creates a feeling of claustrophobia with narrow image sections . The exaggerated, bloodthirsty scenes of violence seem as irritating as they are superfluous. "

Johannes Hahn from Robots & Dragons explains: “The fact that the film constantly undermines the audience's expectations creates a sizzling atmosphere of unpredictability.” Hahn also finds it “incredibly refreshing to see Anton Yelchin and Patrick Stewart in roles that don't their previous work. ”Hahn sums up:“ With Green Room, Jeremy Saulnier probably wrote one of the most exciting films of the year. ”

A critic of Das Film Feuilleton says of the film: “Green Room is a little gem - precisely because at first glance it looks like the most boring representative of its genre. But then all of a sudden Imogen Poots, Alia Shawkat, Patrick Stewart and Anton Yelchin step into the title room and transform the apparently transparent setup into an equally exciting and crazy trip. ”The review also states:“ The uncertainty in the Green Room never decreases , especially because Jeremy Saulnier playfully scatters wrong leads, but at the same time does not lose sight of the real essence of the story. "

After the first half of the 2016 film year was over, Saulnier was brought up by Kristopher Tapley and Variety's Jenelle Riley as a possible nominee for best director at the upcoming Academy Awards. They argue, "The director finds a unique atmospheric balance between the gruesome and - when necessary - the comic, while maintaining the sense of direction that is paramount in such a claustrophobic film."

Gross profit

The global box office revenue of the film is currently around 3 million US dollars (as of May 22, 2016).
