action

Eleven-year-old Jess Aarons is neglected by his parents in his family towards his four sisters. Even at school he is an outsider and has no real friends. As the fastest runner in his class, he wants to gain recognition from his classmates, which does not succeed because his new neighbor, Leslie, who is the same age, runs faster than him and wins the important race. Although they don't understand each other at first, Leslie Burke, who is also an outsider at the new school, manages to befriend Jess. With an exuberant imagination, Leslie discovers Jess's secret passion for painting. Together they create a realm of fantasy in the nearby forest that they call Terabithia . Here you can forget the worries of school and family and rule as king and queen over a land full of trolls , giant people and other strange creatures. The only way to get to the country is to swing yourself over a river with an old rope.

One day, when Jess returns from a museum visit with his teacher Miss Edmunds, he learns that Leslie was found dead by the river. The rope snapped when she tried to swing over and her head hit a stone. Jess is deeply sad and feels very guilty about not asking his girlfriend if she would like to come to the museum. It takes a long time for him to overcome his grief. In the end he succeeds because his friendship with Leslie gives him the strength to do so. He builds a bridge to Terabithia and makes his little sister May Belle the new princess of the country. In this way he continues Leslie's work and she remains immortal for him.

Background information

  • In 1985 a 60-minute TV film Bridge to Terabithia was released based on the script by Katherine Paterson and Nancy Sackett. Directed by Eric Till. Miss Edmunds was portrayed by Annette O'Toole .
  • The visual effects are from Weta Digital and the film was shot in New Zealand . For Gabor Csupo, a native of Hungary , it is his film debut as a feature film director.
  • The museum scene was filmed in front of the Auckland War Memorial Museum (exterior) and in the Auckland Art Gallery (exhibition rooms).
  • The piece Keep Your Mind Wide Open from the soundtrack to the film is sung by the young leading actress AnnaSophia Robb herself. It is her debut in music.
  • In an interview with the internet magazine SCI FI Wire, director Gabor Csupo and producer David L. Paterson distanced themselves from the marketing of the film. According to Csupo, the advertising goes a little too far to portray the film as a fantasy film. Producer Paterson was surprised, but also expressed understanding:

Although there is a generation that is very familiar with book, if you are over 40, then you probably haven't, and we need to reach them.

Although a generation is very familiar with the book, those over 40 probably aren't and we need to reach them. "

  • Author Katherine Paterson has this to say about the trailer and the film:

Well, that was the thing I was most afraid of. And if you've seen the trailer, my word. I'm just telling everybody I know, 'Don't see the trailer, don't see the trailer'. Because it's exactly what the trailer ends up making you think, is that it's this glorified fantasy adventure with nothing but special effects, and that's not what we ended up with in this movie. We've ended up with a movie about a friendship between a boy and a girl who develop an imaginary kingdom, and the girl dies, and the boy has to deal with his loss, which is the story of the book.

That was what I was most afraid of, and anyone who watches the trailer has to agree with me. I tell everyone I know, 'Don't you look at the trailer, just don't look at the trailer'. Because what he wants you to believe is: that it's just an overloaded fantasy adventure that can offer nothing but special effects. But that's exactly what makes the film different. Rather, it tells of a friendship between a boy and a girl who together create an imaginary kingdom. And when the girl dies, the boy has to cope with the loss. And that corresponds to the story of the book. "

  • Brücke nach Terabithia was broadcast on ProSieben for the first time on German free TV on April 3, 2010 . The film was seen by 2.98 million viewers, which resulted in a market share of 18.2 percent in the target group of 14 to 49 year olds.

Reviews

"A youth film based on a children's book, which is impressive due to its serious confrontation with death, which at the end is a little too thick due to concessions to the taste of the times of mainstream cinema, but sensitively captures the reality of life and the understanding of children even for barely comprehensible situations."

"Wrongly marketed as an action-heavy fantasy adventure for a young cinema audience, 'Brücke nach Terabithia' convinces with its serious approach to the child's emotional world."

- critic.de

“With 'Brücke nach Terabithia' a convincing mixture of charmingly entertaining adventure story, serious topics and finely dosed fantasy succeeded, which is spiced with pimped-up computer animations, but is never dominated by them. In addition to the sensitive and entertaining story, the youthful cast is clearly the second big plus of the film. "

- filmstarts.de

"Director Gabor Csupo credibly shows the problems children have on their way to adulthood: jealousy of siblings, parents' expectations, bullying at school ."

“'Bridge to Therabithia' is a film about dealing with the injustices of life and how to come to terms with them. Despite the promising topic, it only moves at the outer limits of the fantasy genre. "

- filmszene.de

"The film impresses with the seriousness with which it shows its protagonists (not even Jess' strict father or the committed young teacher become a cliché ), and the astonishing honesty with which death is treated."

- The world online

“'Bridge to Terabithia' is something for children who are no longer very young and who can be expected to deal with issues such as violence at school, first love and death. Nothing seems constructed, everything happens casually "
