Kit Kittredge: An American Girl is an American comedy film from the year 2008 . Directed by Patricia Rozema , the screenplay was written by Ann Peacock based on the stories told by Valerie Tripp .

action

The action takes place in the United States during the Great Depression . The father of ten-year-old Kit Kittredge loses his job as a car dealer and goes to another city to look for work. Kit is practicing writing and dreams of working for the local newspaper in the future. The family takes strangers into their home in order to cope with the difficult times together.

Kit's mother and others are robbed. The Kittredge family is in danger of losing their house because they don't have the money to pay off the loan. Kit and her friends are looking for the robber. One of her friends is suspected to be this, as all traces point to him. In the end, it turns out to be a roommate of Kit and her parents' house. In addition, for the very first time, one of her self-written reports about the life of "Hobos", the homeless, including her boyfriend, is published in the local newspaper.

Reviews

Lael Loewenstein wrote in the magazine Variety on June 19, 2008 that the film belongs to a kind that is no longer produced and that it lives from the "fine" portrayal of Abigail Breslin. Julia Ormond has never been better. Patricia Rozema does an excellent job balancing the elements of a comedy, a tragedy, and tension.

Michael Ordoña wrote in the Los Angeles Times on June 20, 2008 that the film speaks to children by evoking “sincere emotions” without becoming sentimental. His humanistic approach promotes tolerance and hope. The comic scenes would work especially when Patricia Rozema showed sensitivity. Breslin seems "appropriately bold" ; Ormond is warm and convincing.
