The flight into the unknown (Original title: Running on Empty ) is an American drama film directed by Sidney Lumet from 1988.
action
Danny Pope is a young man whose parents Annie and Arthur took an active part in the anti-war movement in the 1970s. Back then, they blew up a napalm laboratory. A caretaker they knew nothing about was seriously injured. Since that time they have been on the run and are financially supported by an underground network of the movement. Again and again they have to move and develop new identities.
A music teacher becomes aware of Danny, a talented pianist. Because earlier school documents of Danny's piano playing cannot be found, the teacher becomes curious. While Danny is rehearsing for a performance, he falls in love with Lorna, the teacher's daughter. In order to come to terms with his circumstances, he confides in Lorna.
Meanwhile, Annie learns of Danny's performance. She realizes that her son wants to lead an independent life and she has to let him go. Father Arthur is not enthusiastic about it. Annie risks family safety when she contacts her stranger father. She wants Danny to be safe when she and Arthur have to go into hiding again. Arthur realizes that he is becoming the kind of authoritarian person he protested against in days gone by. He also realizes that he cannot regulate Danny's life. The family - Annie, Arthur, and the younger brother - leave Danny to reassume a new identity.

Reviews
Roger Ebert of the Chicago Sun-Times gave the film four stars out of four and named it one of the best films of the year. The lexicon of international films said that director Sidney Lumet “did not stage the story as a political thesis or as a spectacular escape”. Instead, "the people, their personal responsibility, their thoughts and feelings are [in] the center". The result was "a moving drama about people trapped in their own fault and those of others, which also reflects the effects of the protest movement of the 1960s". The conclusion of Cinema was: "Morally complex, moving and subtle."
