Steven Hill (born Solomon Krakovsky ; born February 24, 1922 in Seattle , Washington ; † August 23, 2016 in Monsey , New York ) was an American actor .

Life

Steven Hill made his first appearance on Broadway in 1946 in Ben Hecht's A Flag Is Born with Marlon Brando . The following year he was one of the founding members of Lee Strasberg's Actors Studio alongside Marlon Brando, Montgomery Clift and Julie Harris . From 1948 to 1951 he played in the play adaptation Mr. Roberts of Joshua Logan and in several other Broadway productions. His first feature film he had in 1950 Lady Without a Passport at the side of Hedy Lamarr . However, film appearances were initially rare, he was mainly active in theater and television.

In 1966 he was cast for the lead role in the series Cobra, Take Over . After refusing to work on the Sabbath as an Orthodox Jew , Hill was replaced by Peter Graves from the production company at the beginning of the second season . He then retired from acting for ten years and instead worked in other professions, such as a real estate agent. From the beginning of the 1980s, however, he was able to build on his earlier career. He worked, among other things, in supporting roles in feature films such as The Eyewitness , Yentl , Prosecutors You Don't Kiss and The Company .

From 1990 to 2000 he played the role of prosecutor Adam Schiff in 227 episodes of the television series Law & Order . In 1998 and 1999 he was nominated for an Emmy for Best Supporting Actor in a Drama Series and seven times for a Screen Actors Guild Award in the category Best Acting Ensemble in a TV Series - Drama with the rest of the ensemble . After leaving Law & Order in 2000, the actor retired into private life.

From 1951 to 1964 Hill was married to actress Selma Stern , with whom he had four children. The marriage ended in divorce. He remained married to his second wife Rachel Hill from 1967 until his death, with her he had five other children. The actor died on August 23, 2016 at the age of 94.
