Dr. Matthew Clark runs a government agency for mentally retarded children. Jean Hansen is a former music teacher who wants to give her life a new meaning. She starts as a new employee at Dr. Clark on. Jean is not used to working with difficult children and can use the rigorous methods of Dr. Clark doesn't understand. She feels sorry for the children and would like to treat them carefully with love and affection. She is particularly fond of 12-year-old Reuben Widdicombe. The boy was sent to the home by the divorced parents. It is locked and does not follow any instructions. Jean wants to bring the parents into the home to open the boy. Dr. However, Clark believes that doing so would harm the child. Nevertheless, Mrs. Widdicombe arrives. In a conversation with Dr. However, she agrees with Clark that an encounter is out of the question. Mrs. Widdicombe leaves again without meeting the boy. However, Reuben saw his mother and ran after the departing car. Shortly afterwards, Reuben escapes from the institution. Dr. Clark brings him back a day later. Jean knows that she is not innocent of the boy's nervous breakdown. She hands Dr. Clark her resignation. Dr. Clark persuades her to stay, however. She should practice a demonstration with the children for Thanksgiving. Reuben also takes part and suddenly opens up. On the day of the performance, Reuben's father comes to take the son out of the institution and send him to a private school. However, when he hears Reuben's poetry recitation and receives the approval of the audience, he knows that his son is in the right place.
