Gloria the Gangster Bride is a 1980 gangster film starring Gena Rowlands in the title role and written and directed by John Cassavetes . In 1999 the American director Sidney Lumet shot a remake of the same name with Sharon Stone in the title role.

action

The film tells the story of a woman who comes from a criminal background in New York and comes into conflict with her old friends when she rescues a boy from the neighborhood whose family is murdered in cold blood by gangsters. At first she tries clumsily to get rid of the boy. When the killers reappear to get the boy, she turns against them. A wild chase begins, which ends in the gangsters' headquarters.

The core of the film is a character study of an aged gangster bride who desires nothing more than to escape the milieu in order to spend the rest of her life in peace with her savings.

The boy, the son of a Puerto Rican friend, is forced on her when the gangsters are already in the house to kill the family. A conflict develops between the disoriented boy, who has just lost his family, and the sullen woman, whose life has also been overturned by this event. When she realizes the futility of fleeing and takes the initiative, this also leads to a greater closeness between the two protagonists.

Reviews

"An action film about the ubiquity of violence, which ironically reverses the patterns of the gangster film genre and, with its fairytale-like ending, also accepts the dream world of the cinema."
