Paul Stewart (* 13. May 1908 in New York City as Paul Sternberg , † 17th February 1986 in Los Angeles ) was an American actor .
life and career
The son of businessman Maurice D. Sternberg initially studied law at Columbia University in New York . He played his first theater role in 1925, followed by his first role on Broadway in the piece Two Seconds from 1930. After further appearances on Broadway, he worked temporarily for the radio station WLW , where Stewart was also on the production of the popular news program The March of Time involved. He made the acquaintance of Orson Welles , whom he got his first job on the radio. When Welles rose to fame as an actor and director, he hired Stewart to work for his Mercury Theater . There Stewart was involved in 1938 with a role in the radio play The War of the Worlds , which at the time allegedly triggered nationwide hysteria because of its realistic staging. In 1941 there was another collaboration with Welles: In his classic film Citizen Kane , Stewart played the role of Raymond , the sarcastic butler of the title character.
Citizen Kane marked the film debut of Paul Stewart, which was followed by numerous supporting roles in a total of over 50 movies. Stewart appeared particularly often in roles as a cynical villain or gangster, for example in the film noir : in Das eheimliche Fenster (1949) he played the murderous adversary of Bobby Driscoll and in Robert Aldrich's noir classic Rattennest (1955) he played the seedy Carl Evello . In Cold Bloody (1967), the film adaptation of the novel of the same name by Truman Capote , he was seen in the role of reporter Jensen. From the 1950s onwards, Stewart also made regular guest roles on dozens of television series such as Dr. Kildare , Columbo , The Streets of San Francisco and Remington Steele seen. He took his last role in 1985 in an episode of the television series MacGyver .
Paul Stewart was a founding member of the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (AFTRA). Since 1939 he was married to the singer Peg LaCentra . He died at the age of 77 from complications from a heart attack .
