In Cold Blood (Original Title: In Cold Blood ) is an American thriller from director Richard Brooks from 1967, after the novel by Truman Capote . The background of the film is a real murder of a family of four, the police manhunt and the interrogation of the two suspects as well as the trial, the verdict and its execution.

action

Kansas November 1959: Perry Smith and Dick Hickock with a criminal record of manslaughter plan to raid the Clutter family's home. They believe that Mr. Clutter has a large amount of cash in a safe. After gradually realizing that there is no safe or large amounts of cash in the house, Smith kills the couple and two of their teenage children. The bodies of the victims are discovered the next day. The police investigation begins immediately. The psychologist called in does not believe in a robbery - only a few checks, a radio and $ 43 are missing. The two wanted people try to evade the search, but when they pay with the stolen checks, they are arrested.

The police interrogated the two of them and confronted them with incriminating evidence, for example with a bloody boot print that fits exactly into the profile of one of the two boots. Refusal to answer will delay the interrogation. They claim they made a mistake and left a witness. In the end, Hickock confesses to avoid being sentenced to death. A judicial jury finds Smith and Hickock guilty and sentenced them to death by hanging. In 1965 they were executed in Lansing .

background

Columbia Pictures tried to get Paul Newman and Steve McQueen to star. But the two stars already had other projects in the works.

In order to achieve the greatest possible authenticity, the film was shot on original locations in Kansas , such as in the original Clutters house and in the same courtroom. Six of the jurors at the time also served as jurors on the film. The family photos in the house were original photos of the Clutter family. The two pairs of eyes on the film posters are also those of the real murderers.

In 1996 a remake was made for television. Both in the USA and in Germany the film had the same title or original title. Anthony Edwards and Eric Roberts can be seen in the roles of the murderers . Sam Neill played the detective . Directed by Jonathan Kaplan .

Reviews

The lexicon of international films found it to be a film “which is a clinically exact reconstruction and at the same time tries to motivate the crime by describing the history and the consequences. The authenticity of the book style is followed by a film designed with emphatic seriousness, which ends in a rousing plea against the death penalty. "The magazine Cinema wrote:" Richard Brooks succeeded in the congenial film adaptation, in documentary style and with complex flashbacks. "The Protestant film observer pulled the following conclusion: “Pedantic exact reconstruction of a capital crime actually committed, the persecution, apprehension and execution of the perpetrators. Sober and authentic film adaptation of the literary source by Capote, which calls for serious discussion. Recommended from 18. "

Awards

The film was nominated for an Oscar in the categories of Best Director , Best Adapted Screenplay , Best Film Music and Best Cinematography , but came out empty-handed. It was also nominated for a Golden Globe for Best Motion Picture Drama .

In 2008 the film was entered into the National Film Registry .
