Vaughn Taylor (actor)
Vaughn Everett Taylor (born February 22, 1910 in Boston , Massachusetts , † April 26, 1983 in Los Angeles , California ) was an American actor .
life and career
Vaughn Taylor graduated from Northeastern University. He made his film debut in The Man with the Camera as early as 1933 , but Taylor did not make his second film until 1946, as in his early years he mainly concentrated on appearances in radio plays and plays - albeit with such modest success at first that he stayed at times had to stay afloat as a paid blood donor. After being used in World War II , television, which was becoming more popular in the late 1940s, turned out to be an opportunity for Taylor to take advantage of. In the 1950s he established himself as a well-known television actor with numerous guest roles in television series, especially four appearances in the mystery series Twilight Zone . He had other appearances in series classics such as Bonanza , The Untouchables , Crazy Wilder West and Perry Mason . He was nominated for an Emmy Award for Best Actor in 1952 and 1953 .
His tall, gaunt-looking figure and his mustache often shifted the black-haired character actor to serious and boring, and occasionally corrupt or spiteful, authority figures. He often played judges, superiors, pastors or doctors. In addition to his television work, Taylor developed into a busy supporting actor in Hollywood films from the end of the 1950s, including as a lawyer in the music film Jailhouse Rock - Rhythm Behind Bars (1957) alongside Elvis Presley and in the role of Deacon Davis in the Tennessee Williams film The Cat on a Hot Tin Roof (1958) with Elizabeth Taylor and Paul Newman in the lead roles. Probably his best-known film role was in Alfred Hitchcock's legendary thriller Psycho in 1960 : Here he played George Lowery , the boss of the later murdered secretary Marion Crane.
1976 Taylor retired from the acting business after around 175 film and television series. He died in 1983 at the age of 73, leaving behind his wife Ruth Moss.
