Gerald S. O'Loughlin
Gerald Stuart O'Loughlin (born December 23, 1921 in New York City , Ney York - † July 31, 2015 in Los Angeles , California ) was an American actor .
Life
O'Loughlin grew up in Spring Valley and served in the United States Marine Corps during World War II . He actually wanted to study law, but could not afford the costs. With funds from the GI Bill , which he was entitled to due to his military service, he financed his acting training under Sanford Meisner at the Neighborhood Playhouse School of Theater . Meisner then recommended him to Lee Strasberg , and O'Loughlin became a member of The Actors Studio . In the 1950s, O'Loughlin made his film, television and Broadway debut , where he appeared on stage in productions of Endstation Sehnsucht and One flew over the cuckoo's nest . In 1962 he received for his performance in the off-Broadway production Who'll Save the Plowboy? an Obie Award .
O'Loughlin made his feature film debut in the drama Lovers and Lollipops directed by Morris Engel and Ruth Orkin . He had a major supporting role in Fred Zinnemann's society drama Poisonous Snow in 1957 . His other notable feature films include the thriller Cold Blood by Richard Brooks , John Sturges ' Alistair MacLean filming Eisstation Zebra , the mafia film The Valachi Papers by Terence Young , the literary adaptation The Ultimatum by Robert Aldrich and the action comedy City Heat - The Bull and the Snoop from Richard Benjamin .
However, he gained greater fame among the US public mainly through his work in television. In addition to being a guest star in numerous successful series such as Smoking Colts , Charlie's Angels , Simon & Simon , Emergency Room - Die Notaufnahme and Just in Case Amy , the audience associated his name with his role as Lt. Ed Ryker in the crime series California Cops , which he played in 96 episodes between 1972 and 1976. After the series ended, he received an offer from producer Aaron Spelling to play the role of captain on Love Boat , but he turned it down - a decision he later regretted. He also had major series roles in the short-lived action series Automan and the family series Our House .
O'Loughlin was married to casting director Meryl O'Loughlin between 1966 and her death in 2007 . The marriage had two children. He died at West Hills Hospital in Los Angeles after spending his final years at the Motion Picture & Television Country House and Hospital in Woodland Hills .
