Owen Marshall is a widowed attorney who lives in Santa Barbara, California with 12-year-old daughter Melissa. With the help of his assistants and the secretary Frieda Krause, Marshall defends his clients in various areas of law. Marshall handles traffic offenses as well as divorce and murder cases.

The pilot episode of the series was filmed full-length. Screenwriter Jerry McNeely was a professor of law at the University of Wisconsin . In 1971 and 1974 two episodes were filmed that were cross-over with the series Dr. med. Marcus Welby make up. Guest stars included Rick Nelson and Peggy Lee . John Travolta , Mark Hamill , Farrah Fawcett , Tom Selleck and Louis Gossett Jr. played minor roles in the series early in their careers.
