California Cops - Neu im Einsatz (alternative title: Die Rookies , original title: The Rookies ) is an American crime series that was broadcast on ABC between 1972 and 1976 .

The series is about graduates ( rookies ) a police academy in southern California ; starting with Mike Danko, William "Willie" Gillis and Terry Webster. Your trainer and mentor is Lt. Ed Ryker, who does not always approve of the sometimes unorthoxic methods of his recruits and has to explain to them more often the difference between the theory learned and the practical application. The consequences affect everyday police work, but also the private life of the officers. Mike Danko is the only young civil servant who is married; his wife Jill works as a nurse . In the second season, Gillis is replaced by a new recruit, Chris Owens.

The series represented Kate Jackson's career breakthrough, after the end of production she was signed by producers Aaron Spelling and Leonard Goldberg as the first "angel" for Charlie's Angels . Jaclyn Smith , another "angel," guest starred on a season four episode.
For the theme music, the producers were able to win over the film composer Elmer Bernstein , who was nominated for eleven Oscars in his career .
In the third season of the series, the spin-off series The Knallharten Five was launched by means of a double episode .
From 1978 onwards, only a few episodes of the series ran in the regional evening program of the ARD. The series premiered in 2006 with a new synchronization, another broadcast on pay TV took place by Kabel eins classics from 2007 to 2008.
In the United States, the first two seasons are available on DVD so far ; there is no German-language publication.
