action

Jim is employed as the first officer on the steamer Patna. When the ship, with several dozen passengers on board, gets caught in a heavy storm and threatens to sink, he and the rest of the crew leave the ship without bothering about the passengers. Later, when the crew arrives in port, he discovers that the Patna and its passengers have been rescued by a French freighter. In order to relieve his conscience of his cowardly behavior, Jim - in contrast to the other crew members - faces the indictment, whereupon he is dishonorably discharged from the merchant navy . He sees a chance to make amends when he accepts an order to deliver weapons to a people in the remote Patusan settlement who are being oppressed by a tyrant. Together with the oppressed, Jim fights against the tyranny and is soon worshiped by them. When a brutal pirate named 'Gentleman Brown' finally shows up in Patusan, Jim tries again to believe him and he would leave without a fight. He is making his final mistake. Brown, of course, wants gold and money, and the fight starts again. Several people from the village and Dain Waris, the son of chief Doramin, are killed. Doramin demands his death and it is clear to Jim: He cannot and does not want to 'jump' again, not fail again.

DVD release

The film was released on DVD in Germany in September 2004. The DVD contains the sound in German, English, Italian, French and Spanish. Scenes left out in the original German premiere have been reinserted here, but not dubbed, only subtitled.

Cinema spoke of a “loud and moral epic about fear and honor”, with which “Richard Brooks [succeeded] in a masterpiece that was often underestimated”. The cinema magazine also praised cameraman Freddie Young "for brilliant pictures, and even supporting actors like Daliah Lavi and Akim Tamiroff are exquisite". Finally, Cinema said: "The film was 15 minutes too long - it doesn't matter!"
