The artist is in the 2007 / 2008 resultant series "timelines" his formal exploration of line continues and combines it with the gestural impulses of action painting and the mechanical processes of photography . The use of hair material allows him a game between control and chance, which has always structured his artistic work and leads it to a new level of complexity.

For Mapplethorpe, hair is a symbol of revolution, a sign and barometer of the change in the current status quo . Its application implies conceptual and formal risks that the artist takes on with this ambitious project. His last exhibitions show unique works that were created alone in the darkroom, without a camera . The result is a spiritual and organic balance between chaos and order, an extraordinary visual range that encompasses both the complex peculiarity of fleeting lines and a lively graphic jumble of colors. These new abstract works not only offer a glimpse into Mapplethorpe's history as a photographer, but also show an artist who continually breaks and pushes the boundaries of the photographic process.

Mapplethorpe conceived this idea a few years earlier, initially considering the possibility that traditional photographic methods could soon become obsolete. Although Mapplethorpe temporarily incorporates new digital technologies, he maintains a purist approach, which leads him to show a traditional medium in its absolute origins.
