David Anthony Pirner , called Dave Pirner (born April 16, 1964 in Green Bay , Wisconsin ) is an American musician and songwriter . He became known as the singer and guitarist of the band Soul Asylum .

biography

Pirner was born on April 16, 1964 in Green Bay. When he was 17 he lived and worked in Minneapolis , Minnesota . He taught himself to play the drums. At the age of 20 he started his career as a drummer in a punk band called Loud Fast Rules in Minneapolis with Karl Mueller (bass) and Dan Murphy (guitar). When Pirner switched to singing and playing guitar, Pat Morley joined the drums. Pat was later replaced by Grant Young, and the band changed their name to Soul Asylum . At first, the criticism found the band to be maudlin and erratic, but at the same time captivating. They had a huge success with the single Runaway Train from the 1992 album Grave Dancers Union . The video for the piece with the music and the text by Pirner shows photos of missing children and scenes of children running away, kidnapped and abused. The second big hit from this album was "Black Gold" - because of those two tracks it sold more than two million copies.

After Soul Asylum became better known, Pirner made guest appearances on various albums by artists he admired, such as Paul Westerberg , Mike Watt and The Autumn Defense .

In 1999 Soul Asylum took a hiatus after recording Candy from a Stranger in 1998, which sold less than 1992's Grave Dancer's Union and 1995's Let Your Dim Light Shine , which included the big hits Misery and Just Like Anyone . But after four years Soul Asylum got back together and started to write new songs in the studio, which was the idea of the terminally ill bassist Karl Mueller. Karl died on June 17, 2005 at the age of 42 after a long battle with esophageal cancer . About a year after his death, Soul Asylum released their last album to date, The Silver Lining, on Legacy Recordings, which is dedicated to the life and memory of Karl. About half of the songs were recorded with the late bassist, such as Lately , Slowly Rising and Standing Water . The first hit on this album was Stand Up And Be Strong . In 2008 Soul Asylum was on tour with a new line-up consisting of Dave Pirner (guitar, vocals), Dan Murphy (guitar), Michael Bland (drums) and Tommy Stinson (bass).

Dave Pirner became as famous for his personal life as he was for his music. He was romantically involved with movie star Winona Ryder and made a cameo in her 1994 film Reality Bites . Pirner was also part of the All-Star Band (1994) put together for the film Backbeat . A misunderstanding of the textual content of the hit single Wynona's Big Brown Beaver ("Winona's big brown beaver", beaver is a slang expression for pubic hair) by Primus leads to a brief rivalry with Les Claypool (of which Claypool was not even aware until the subject was during an interview). Reportedly, Pirner felt attacked, while Ryder did not see it that way. Pirner also contributed to the soundtrack of the 1997 Kevin Smith film Chasing Amy . The song Cant Even Tell was used by Kevin Smiths Clerks and later Misery by Clerks II .

In 2002 Pirner released his first solo album entitled Faces & Names on Ultimatum Music. He also contributed with his vocals for the song Chillout Tent on the 2006 publication of Boys and Girls in America by The Hold Steady on.

Pirner now lives in the Bywater district of New Orleans , which was hit by Hurricane Katrina in 2005 . There he is part of a musician collective and works on music productions.
