Reality Bites - Voll das Leben (Original title: Reality Bites ; also: Voll das Leben - Reality Bites ) is an American tragic comedy from 1994. The director was Ben Stiller , the script was written by Helen Childress. The main roles were played by Winona Ryder and Ethan Hawke .

action

The film accompanies the young adults Lelaina Pierce, Vickie Miner, Sammy Gray and Troy Dyer as they take their first steps in life. After graduating, these Generation X individuals struggle with growing up in their own way. Lelaina works for a television station , but is not taken seriously by the presenter. Vickie works in a department store and is starting her first steps on the corporate ladder. She has numerous affairs, which she always ended hastily. Shy Sammy has to confess his homosexuality to himself before he can lead a free life. The fatalistic Troy, on the other hand, is struggling with the imminent death of his father and decides to enjoy life first before he wants to start working. All four live together in a shared apartment, which sometimes leads to arguments due to financial problems. In addition, Lelaina and Troy have a subliminal affection for each other, which puts additional strain on the situation in the house. Lelaina captures the lives and struggles of all four in a documentary film.

Through several detours, Lelaina gets to know and love the professionally successful Michael Grates. Troy cannot cope with the yuppie- like manner of Michael, however, and so it comes to a break with Lelaina. Meanwhile, Michael submits the documentary to a music station to help Lelaina, who is now unemployed. However, through the clumsy editing of the film, Lelaina realizes that although Michael is honest with her, he ultimately doesn't understand her. So Lelaina and Troy finally get together.

Reviews

“The film touches on various behaviors of protagonists of Generation X : those young and“ consumer-minded ”people who were born in the 1970s and who, after a solid education, fall into skepticism and nihilism without much hope of social and professional advancement , but at the same time fall into skepticism being able to “sell” in a clever and media-savvy manner. The thematically interesting film aptly describes the lip service of its protagonists and their (not exactly new) love affair, but gets lost in bizarre scenes. The superficial dramaturgy inevitably fails in the no man's land between comedy and problem film. "

"Reality Bites" has, as a narrative framework, the old love triangle of the girl standing between two men; In between, however, there is plenty of space and time for those fashionable costumes and backdrops that borrow the bright colors from the late sixties and the aggressive attitude from the late seventies for those contemporary dialogues that fetishize failure and suspect betrayal behind every success.

And sometimes, almost as an excuse, the smooth surface is riddled with video recordings that are blurry and shaky: Winona Ryder shoots the film in the film, the cheaper doppelganger, the unadorned portrait of her generation, with simple means and without a budget.

In those moments the film looks as if the producers suspected that the heroes of 'Reality Bites', these skeptical young people, wouldn't spend a dime on a film like 'Reality Bites'. "
