Night Falls on Manhattan is an American film drama of Sidney Lumet from the year 1997 with Andy Garcia in the lead role. It is a film adaptation of the novel "Tainted Evidence" by Robert Daley .

action

Former cop Sean Casey is finishing his law degree . He finds a job as a public prosecutor . His father, Liam Casey, is a police officer and is shot while trying to arrest drug lord Washington. Two other police officers are killed by Washington, and another is mistakenly shot by a large police force.

Suspect Jordan Washington and his attorney Sam Vigoda announce in the media that Washington will surrender. Sean Casey gets the case as a prosecutor and can get a conviction. However, the opposing lawyer also targeted police corruption during the trial . A short time later, Sean was elected District Attorney . A notebook found on the body of a policeman suggests that Washington bribed numerous policemen, including Joey, Liam Casey's partner, who initially denied this to Sean.

When the corrupt cops are discovered, Joey tries to unpack to make a deal with Sean, but shows no remorse. It turns out that several police officers planned to shoot Washington during the police operation because Washington did not want to pay them higher protection money. Joey eventually commits suicide.

Sean finds his father Liam on the track and he confesses to having forged the arrest warrant against Washington, because it had expired the day before. Sean is undecided what to do, as is his friend Peggy, who works for the Washington defense attorney. Since the father no longer wants to face this conflict with Sean, he goes to a judge and confesses it to him. However, he calls Sean and tells him that he clearly remembers having issued a new arrest warrant and at the same time issues a new backdated one so that Sean can destroy the fake one.

background

The film was shot in New York City , Tallahassee , Florida, and Marietta , Georgia . It premiered on October 22, 1996 in London . In October 1996 the film was shown at the MIFED film festival in Milan . It was first seen in the United States on May 16, 1997, and in Germany on June 19, 1997. It fetched 9.9 million US dollars at the US box office , including a good 2.9 million US dollars on the opening weekend. Almost 21,000 viewers were counted at the German box office in the first week of the game.

The role of Sam Vigoda is loosely based on the career of US civil rights attorney William Kunstler . He represented the drug dealer Larry Davis, who shot six police officers, but was acquitted after Kunstler alleged that his client must fear for his life because the police themselves were involved in the drug trade.

Cinematographer David Watkin can be seen in a cameo depicting a sleeping judge.

There is an alternative ending to the film, which, however, was changed at Sidney Lumet's request in favor of the version shown in the cinemas.

criticism

The lexicon of international film saw the film as “a perfectly staged mixture of police thriller and court film , without spectacular effects, which asks questions about power and abuse of power, corruption and corruptibility, law and justice. Good actors, a convincing and sensitive staging and the well-considered equipment contribute to the success of the crime chamber play. ” James Berardinelli wrote that the film was the“ triumphant return ”of director Sidney Lumet. He combines various film genres in an unexpected way. The script, the characters and the performance of Andy García, Richard Dreyfuss and Ian Holm were praised. Prisma wrote that the film was "played sensitively" and critic.de thinks the police and court thriller was Lumet's "best film of the nineties".

Awards

Andy Garcia was nominated for the 1998 ALMA Award .
