action

Eric and Amy Bowen are moving with their three children, the eldest daughter Kendra, son Griffin and the youngest daughter Madison, to a new and cheaper house because Eric has recently become unemployed and they can no longer afford the old one. The first night they hear strange noises in the walls and Griffin finds a box of clown dolls that appears to have been left behind in the house. In the middle of the night, the lights and electronic devices begin to turn on and off as if by magic and an invisible force seems to move through the house. Awakened by the unrest in the house, Griffin goes down the stairs and finds Maddy in the living room talking to an unknown presence on the television. Maddy turns around and says to him: "You are here". Griffin tries to turn off the television, which causes the light to get out of control. Eric and Amy inquire and learn that their house was built on an old cemetery, but that the bodies and tombstones are said to have been moved.

Kendra's cell phone starts making strange noises and a ghost traps her in the basement. Griffin notices that one of the clown dolls appears to be moving. The doll now attacks him, but he can destroy it and escape. He tells Maddy to stay in her room while he goes to look for Kendra, who has disappeared. During this time, Maddy is lured into the closet, dragged into an infinite void and carried off into the darkness by ghosts. Meanwhile, Griffin is grabbed by the branches of the old tree in front of the house. When Amy and Eric get home, they see Griffin being held by the branches of the tree while Kendra tells them to look for Maddy. While searching the house, the family slowly realizes that Maddy's voice seems to be coming from the television and that she is trapped in it. Amy and Griffin then go to a research department for paranormal activity. The researchers around Dr. Brooke Powell set up devices in the house and give all family members GPS transmitters so that they can always locate where they are in the house. While trying to contact Maddy, Eric is ambushed by a ghost similar to Maddy. Excited, he breaks through the wall unit, revealing the portal through which Maddy was drawn into the spirit world. The researchers realize that this haunt is caused by a poltergeist. Dr. Powell then decides to call occult specialist and television celebrity Carrigan Burke.

Burke arrives at the house and explains to the family that Maddy is alive and may be psychologically able to communicate with the ghosts and was abducted by them. He also reveals that they are dealing with poltergeists who are trapped and angry because only the tombstones of the old cemetery have been moved and the bodies of the deceased have been left in the graves. They now plan to rescue Maddy from purgatory. Burke anchors a rope in Maddy's room, tosses it into the vortex, and tries to use Griffin's toy as a drone to guide Maddy, but it is destroyed by the poltergeists. Griffin blames himself for leaving Maddy alone in her room and wants to go through the portal himself to get her back. When he finds Maddy, the poltergeists try to intercept her and destroy the rope, but the two children escape. The family now wants to leave the house forever, but are stopped by the poltergeisters who are now trying to pull them back into the house in order to kidnap Maddy again. The family can save them, however, and Burke now decides to go into the whirlpool himself to lead the spirits into the light. Meanwhile, the Bowens flee and the house is torn into the afterlife by a huge vortex of light. The investigation team tries to save the equipment and goes in search of a sign of life from Carrigan Burke, whether he possibly managed to escape in time.

After these terrible events, the Bowen family is looking for a new home again. A realtor shows them a house with lots of storage space and an old tree in the back yard. Then the Bowens drive away laughing. During the end credits it is revealed that Carrigan survived the incident and is back on the set of a show about ghosts. He is now presenting the show together with Dr. Powell.

Reviews

Wolfgang Stuflesser from Norddeutscher Rundfunk attests the film a good technical implementation, but considers the 3D effects to be unnecessary. He writes on ndr.de:

“Of course, the film is technically up to date - both in terms of the 3D effects, which, by the way, are completely dispensable, as well as with the devices in the film. The tube television has become a flat screen. Apparently, the ghosts have not missed digitization and can now take possession of an iPhone without any problems . "

Christoph Petersen from Filmstarts praises the visual effects, the camera and the good acting performances of Sam Rockwell:

"After the innovative animation of the haunted house in ' Monster House ' has already impressed us , director Gil Kenan has come up with a whole series of visual delicacies even after switching to real-life films, which may not necessarily scare us, but at least amaze us . [...] And then there is also the greatest asset of the film: ' Iron Man 2 ' villain Sam Rockwell (' Moon '). With his typical dry sense of humor, he mimes the perfect family man: While he is simply super cool in the first half, his later desperate fight for his daughter actually touches you, which is rare in modern horror cinema. That we keep our fingers crossed for his demon-plagued family is in large part thanks to Rockwell. "
