Recipe to fall in love (Original title: No Reservations ) is a romantic film drama directed by Scott Hicks from 2007 with Catherine Zeta-Jones and Aaron Eckhart in the leading roles.

It is a remake of the 2001 film Bella Martha .

action

The perfectionist Kate Armstrong is the head chef at the posh restaurant 22 Bleecker in Manhattan . She finds it difficult to deal with criticism of herself or her food so that her boss sends her to a therapist.

One day, Kate's sister Christine dies in a car accident. To prevent the adoption of her niece Zoe, whose father is unknown, Kate agrees to take her in. However, Kate does not really know how to deal with Zoe, so she is surprised, for example, why the noble dishes she cooks are not eaten by the 10-year-old child and why the girl prefers simple pasta dishes.

To make matters worse, she has a new chef, Nick Palmer, at her side. Kate sees him as a threat to her position as head chef and so she often clashes with Nick. When Zoe visits the restaurant, it is Nick who finds access to the girl. As a result, Zoe visits the restaurant more and more often and Kate and Nick gradually get closer.

One day Zoe falls asleep in the classroom, whereupon the girl explains that she has to work for board and lodging in the restaurant. The headmistress threatens to inform the authorities. In order not to lose Zoe, Kate forbids evening visits to the restaurant. Zoe takes this as a rejection.

Nick receives an offer from Kate's boss to replace her as head chef and refuses. Kate and Nick's relationship seems to have ended. When Zoe finds out about the breakup, she runs away. Nick helps Kate with the search and together they finally find the child at the mother's grave. Nick is offered the job of head chef at a San Francisco restaurant .

Kate doesn't know what to do next. She tells her therapist that she would like a “cookbook for life”. He replies "the recipes you create yourself are the best". She then goes to Nick and asks him not to go to San Francisco and stay with her. After all, they both open their own bistro called "Kate-Nick-Zoe's-Bistro".

Reviews

James Berardinelli wrote on ReelViews that the film may not be a “contemporary classic”, but that it has more heart than almost any other film currently being shown. It is “charming” and “moving”, but it is difficult to find an audience in the summer for a “small” story based on her characters about a lonely cook and a child without a mother. Catherine Zeta-Jones does an "excellent" job in expressing the sadness of the character being played. Abigail Breslin as Zoe sometimes hits the wrong note, but overall she is credible.

Carina Chocano wrote in the Los Angeles Times on July 27, 2007 that the film was one of those films that would precisely depict a life that does not exist. He seems one-dimensional. Although everything in the film is designed in such a way that the viewer feels better after the screening, this seems "artificial" and "euphemistic" in a depressing way.

The film service says: “Adaptation of Sandra Nettelbeck's successful German film Bella Martha 2001 for the US market, whose female star does not know how to embody the development of his role in a credible way. The solid, but somewhat soulless staged romantic comedy unfolds some charm when it comes to depicting everyday kitchen life. "

Awards

Abigail Breslin was nominated for a Young Artist Award for her role .

The German Film and Media Assessment FBW in Wiesbaden awarded the film the rating particularly valuable.
