action

Patti Randall and her parents Peter and Jade live in a small town in New England . One day, Patti's cat brings DC a watch with the word help carved on it. The watch belongs to a kidnapped woman who is widely reported in the media. Patti brings the watch to FBI agent Zeke Kelso, who convinces his boss Boetticher to authorize surveillance of the cat's movements.

The following night, four agents follow the cat, but they find no trace of the hostage. One of the agents is bitten by a dog, and a woman is caught depositing meat in front of a security guard's door every night. The furious Boetticher gives Kelso 24 hours to solve the case.

Later it turns out that Patti carved part of the word help himself. Kelso is ordered to make coffee for his colleagues and is threatened with suspension. Patti wants to leave town, in the train station she meets the woman who is in love with a security guard and brings him fresh meat every night. The women talk and decide to stay in town. The woman in love reveals her love to the guard, and he returns it.

Patti finds the kidnapped woman and calls Kelso, who, however, wants nothing more to do with the case. During the rescue attempt, Patti is surprised by the kidnapper, which is not clearly shown. After a few hours, the worried Jade calls Randall Kelso. He goes in search of Patti and tries to empathize with a cat's psyche.

Kelso finds the tied up wife and Patti. It turns out that they were kidnapped by an elderly couple known in the city. The kidnappers flee in a stolen car, Patti and Kelso pursue them in another car. After the persecution, which has seen some destruction, the kidnappers are found. Boetticher congratulates Kelso.

Patti and Kelso become friends. DC finds a cat with whom he has children.

Reviews

James Berardinelli described the film on ReelViews as "recycled" and "uninspired". Christina Ricci is next to Natalie Portman one of the most talented actresses in her age group, but the film does not mean a career step forward for her. Berardinelli criticized the portrayal of Doug E. Doug as "disappointing".

Kevin Thomas wrote in the Los Angeles Times on February 14, 1997 that the film would be of particular interest to young children. He criticized the character of Zeke Kelso as "idiotic", but praised the character of Patti Randall and the portrayal of Christina Ricci. He also praised supporting actors George Dzundza, Peter Boyle and Estelle Parsons.

TV Today criticized the film as "uninspired", the only bright spot is the portrayal of Christina Ricci.

The lexicon of the international film misses "every minimum of care in the development of the material." It is a "nasty slapstick" with characters that are reminiscent of caricatures.

Awards

Christina Ricci was nominated for the Young Artist Award and the Kids' Choice Award in 1998 .
