action
One night a small meteorite struck near the small town of Arborville. An old tramp watches this and runs to the crater. He sees that the meteorite contains a gelatinous liquid and pokes in it with a branch, to which a handful of the jelly sticks and a few moments later clasps his hand. When he wants to chop off his hand, he is hit by football player Paul Taylor, who is on the road with cheerleader Meg Penny, and brought to the hospital by him and the boy Brian Flagg, who is also passing by.
After Brian leaves the hospital, the tramp is eaten away by slime. When Paul wants to get help by phone, he is devoured by the blob in front of Meg's eyes. Meg's parents and the police, led by Sheriff Herb Geller and Deputy Bill Briggs, don't believe her. Instead, they suspect Flagg and interrogate him. In the meantime, the blob has left the hospital, kills a couple in the woods and makes his way through the sewer to the city.
Brian is released from the police station and meets with the runaway Meg in a small restaurant. But the blob attacks shortly afterwards. Brian and Meg can escape into a freezer, but the owner of the restaurant, Fran Hewitt, her employee George Ruit and Sheriff Geller, who wanted to eat there, are devoured by the blob.
Brian and Meg go into the woods to see Briggs. There you encounter a military epidemic command led by Dr. Meddows and Col. Hargis. Meddows tells the two that contagious bacteria spread as a result of the meteorite impact and that they have quarantined the entire city . The two are to be brought back to town. Brian doesn't trust people and flees while Meg stays behind.
Once in town, Meg learns that her little brother Kevin and his friend Eddie Beckner are watching a slasher film there thanks to the permission of Eddie's brother Anthony, who works in the cinema . The blob reaches the cinema, devours two cinema employees and attacks the visitors. Meg manages to escape into the sewer with Kevin and Eddie, but they are followed by the blob.
Brian is about to leave the forest when he overhears a conversation between Meddows and his assistant Jennings and learns the truth: the alleged meteorite was a satellite and the blob the result of a failed biological weapon test. Then they hear from Anthony through a radio message that Meg, Kevin, Eddie and the blob are in the sewer system. Meddows sees this as an opportunity to catch the blob alive. When asked what should happen to civilians, he replied that civilians were expendable. Brian is discovered but escapes on his motorcycle.
Meg, Kevin and Eddie are cornered by the blob in the sewers. Eddie is killed by the blob, as are some soldiers who were supposed to catch the blob. Kevin can save himself, Meg stays behind at first, but is saved by Brian. They manage to escape from the sewers before Meddows can lock them up there. Finally, Brian clarifies the truth to Briggs and the other residents. Meddows tries to shoot Brian, but is seized by the blob. Colonel Hargis then decides to kill the blob and throws an explosive charge into the sewer. This causes the blob to exit the sewers and attack the city. During his march through the city, the blob kills Hargis, several soldiers and citizens. The Reverend of the city, Meeker, recognizes this as the Last Judgment . He is injured by a flamethrower. When Meg saves him with a fire extinguisher, she realizes that the blob shies away from the cold. Under the leadership of Briggs, the residents escape to the town hall. Although they defend themselves well with fire extinguishers, they cannot prevent Briggs from falling victim to the blob. Meanwhile, Brian gets a snow machine from his friend Moss Woodley and attacks the blob with it. With the help of Meg, who attaches an explosive charge to the tanks with liquid nitrogen, they can freeze the blob.
Reverend Meeker saved a fragment of the blob to be kept for Judgment Day.
Reviews
“'The Blob' has a good chance of becoming an American classic . Where David Cronenberg 's preoccupation with the organic and synthetic is aimed entirely inward, Russell completely externalizes these obsessions. That is the logical consequence of American cuisine: The killer burgers strike back. "
