Abbeville is a city in Vermilion Parish in the US state of Louisiana and is also its administrative seat. At the 2010 United States Census , Abbeville had 12,257 residents.

Abbeville is located on the Vermilion River in southern Louisiana, about 30 kilometers south of Lafayette . New Orleans is about 150 miles east of Abbeville.
history
The land on which Abbeville is today was bought on July 25, 1843 by Capuchin missionary Antoine Désiré Mégret for $ 900 . Abbeville is named after the home of Mégret in France, the French city of Abbeville . Previously the place was called La Chapelle.
The first inhabitants were Acadians from Nova Scotia and immigrants from the Mediterranean. In 1910 the church of St. Marie Madeleine was built on the site of the Mègret chapel, which burned down in 1854 .
In 1890 there were 637 people in Abbeville; by 1970 the population grew to 1,940 inhabitants. In 1940 Abbeville was home to 6,672 residents. In 1990 there were 11,187 people in Abbeville. At the 2010 census , the official population was 12,257. In 1988 the film " The Blob " was shot in the small town.
