The coordination polyhedron is a term from crystallography and chemistry , especially complex and solid-state chemistry , and describes the spatial arrangement of atoms , ions or molecules in the form of a polyhedron around a central atom contained therein. It arises when one imagines the particles bound to the central atom to be connected by lines. The specification of the coordination polyhedron facilitates the description of crystal structures and complex compounds , since there are several possibilities of spatial arrangement for most coordination numbers. For the co-ordination number (CN = engl. C COORDINATION N umber) CN = 6 z can. B. In addition to the most common arrangement in the form of an octahedron , the shape of a trigonal prism also occurs.
