In 1949 he passed his Abitur at the secondary school in Haldensleben . He then worked in a steel mill for 2 years. In 1951 he enrolled in the field of mineralogy at the Humboldt University in Berlin . He completed this course in 1956 as a qualified mineralogist. In 1960 he did his doctorate on basic refractory building materials in the steel industry . Between 1956 and 1968 he worked as assistant and senior assistant to Will Kleber at the Mineralogical Institute of the Humboldt University in Berlin. In 1966 he completed his habilitation with a thesis on the metabasites of the Saxon Ore Mountains and the Granulite Mountains .

From 1968 to 1970 he worked as a lecturer in mineralogy and petrology at the Ernst-Moritz-Arndt University of Greifswald . In 1970 he succeeded Will Kleber as full professor for crystallography at the Humboldt University in Berlin.

In the course of profound structural changes at Humboldt University, he was appointed full professor of mineralogy and petrography at Humboldt University in 1984 . In connection with this, he took over the function of director of the Mineralogical Museum at the Museum of Natural History at Humboldt University. He performed both tasks until his retirement in 1993. He then continued his diverse research projects as a freelancer.

The focus of his very broad-based research work was mineralogical-crystallographic diagnostics using the polarization microscope in transmitted and reflected light. He dealt very intensively with the mineral groups of pyroxenes and garnets .

Services

Hans-Joachim Bautsch was a committed university professor who placed particular emphasis on training his students' diagnostic and mineralogical skills. In his scientific research he achieved great success in the investigation of ultrabasic rocks and their minerals . He was also involved in the mineralogical analysis of rocks from the Earth's moon , which were sampled during the Luna flights.
