Casper is an American fantasy comedy from 1995 directed by Brad Silberling and Phil Nibbelink based on a script by Deanna Oliver and Sherri Stoner . The film opened in German cinemas on July 20, 1995.

action

Kathleen "Kat" Harvey, daughter of the "haunted therapist" Dr. James Harvey, comes across the lovable and lonely ghost Casper in an old mansion that her father was given by the greedy owner Carrigan Crittenden. Casper, who longs for nothing more than friendship, finds it difficult to contact the new, mortal residents of the house. His relatives, the ghost trio Uncle Stretch, Stinkie and Fatso, don't think much of the idea of making friends with the "newcomers". Therefore, they try everything possible to drive them out of the house as quickly as possible.

However, Casper and Kat soon find out why Ms. Crittenden and her lackey Dibbs are really here: They are looking for hidden treasure in the house and want Dr. Harvey drives out the ghosts for them. Meanwhile, Kat finds Caspers' old nursery with his toys, as he cannot remember anything from his human life. After recognizing his toys, he remembers a number of details from his childhood. His father was the inventor who, after Casper fell so seriously ill while sledding that he died of it, he built the so-called “Lazarus” machine to bring spirits - especially his deceased son - back to life.

Casper eventually brings Kat to his father's lab. Crittenden and Dibbs follow them and steal the vital ingredient for rebirth. They make the plan that one of them dies, then finds the treasure as a ghost and then comes back to life. However, they get into an argument, with Crittenden trying to kill Dibbs by all means. Eventually she plunges herself into an abyss from which she returns as a ghost and steals the treasure. Casper and Kat then point out to her, however, that since she has become a ghost, apparently she must have unfinished business on earth. She denies this vehemently - and drives to the afterlife before she knows it.

Meanwhile, Dr. Harvey has become a ghost himself through an accident, which is why Casper lets him go into the Lazarus machine. Shortly afterwards, Kat's mother appears - she is no longer a ghost, but apparently an angel . For his good deeds, she grants Casper to be a living person again for one evening to accompany Kat to her Halloween party. The good-looking boy is the star of the party, but just as he and Kat are kissing on the dance floor, he becomes a ghost again and causes panic among the guests - to the great joy and satisfaction of his uncles.

background

Casper is the film adaptation of the comics and cartoons of the same name that are very popular in the USA and are known in Germany under the name Casimir & Co. (or Casimir, the (friendly) ghost ). In the German version of the film, the English name "Casper" was retained and no longer changed to "Casimir". After the film was released, the old cartoons were subsequently changed to "Casper" and given the new title Casper, the friendly spirit . The new cartoon series from 1995 based on the film is also called Casper in German .

Most of the characters' backstory was reinvented for the film.

The machine that brings spirits back to life was named after Lazarus , a man who was brought back to life by Jesus in the New Testament. In addition, the button that activates Lazarus' hiding place is hidden in a fake copy of Frankenstein, which is also about a scientist trying to bring the dead back to life.

When the ghost uncle trio enters the kitchen through the ceiling, they hum Richard Wagner's Valkyries ride , while their lower parts rotate and generate the noise of helicopters, this is a parody of the well-known helicopter attack scene from Francis Ford Coppola's " Apocalypse Now ".

Unlike in the film, Casper's death is not explained in detail in the comics; it seems more like his whole family consists of ghosts and he was born that way. In the comics his uncles are called Fatso, Fusso and Lazo.

Guest appearances

Many well-known actors have brief cameos in the film: Dan Aykroyd is as Dr. Raymond Stantz from Ghostbusters to See and the Shapes that Dr. Harvey believes that when the ghosts take possession of him, Clint Eastwood , Mel Gibson , Rodney Dangerfield and the "Crypt Keeper" from Tales from the Crypt series are included .

Reviews

Steven Spielberg, with his good name as executive producer, stands for the fact that “Casper” not only offers flawless entertainment in the technical area: The sugar-sweet tone of the film clearly bears the Amblin Family Entertainment signature, even if with the theme of death and Resurrection is sometimes handled a little too lightly. Quite a number of spoofs from other films ensure additional fun in this likeable comedy lightweight, which also has the cameos of Hollywood greats such as Clint Eastwood, Rodney Dangerfield and Dan Aykroyd on its credit side. The balanced mixture of comedy and sentimentality of the perfectly realized spooky fun will give an extensive audience goose bumps. "

“Funny and warm-hearted ghost fairy tale for the whole family. The film impresses both with its main characters and with the special effects. Even the somewhat kitschy Hollywood ending is fitting here and makes the whole thing a round thing. "
